Catherine Johanning Obituary

Catherine Johanning

“I just love your mom.” It was a phrase we heard often from family, friends, caregivers, and even new acquaintances. She was continually described as happy, fun loving, always ready to celebrate a special occasion, and the first to offer assistance. Cathy was steadfast and loyal to family and friends and never turned away from any request for help. In times of distress, she was often found praying her rosary. She was devoted to the Lord and never strayed from her religious convictions, no matter the situation. She was an active member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church, singing with the choir for many years and helping with the HOPE Ministry. Cathy was a truly amazing cook and baker. Anytime an event was planned, Mom had a large hand in the food preparation. Her nut rolls, apple strudels, and scratch-made pies were legendary. And everyone wanted to be a recipient of Cathy’s homemade chocolate candies. A life resident of Canton, Cathy recently resided in the Memory Care Unit of The Inn at Belden Village. She passed away peacefully Monday afternoon. The enormous void she left will be virtually impossible to fill. Cathy is preceded in death by her loving husband, Richard “Jack” Johanning and grandson, Bradley Michael Schaller. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Fran and Joseph Nemeth of Bluffton, SC, her sons and daughters-in-law, Gary and Sherry Johanning of Canton, and Jeff and Caroline Johanning of Jacksonville, Fl.; grandchildren and spouses, Jeremy Schaller, Brian and Micah Schaller, Lindsay and Brian Smith, Ryan Johanning, and Jack Johanning; great-grandchildren, Aden Johanning, Bradley Eric Schaller, and Lincoln Smith, along with his brother due in April; her devoted companion Robert Eckstein; sister-in-law, Lavonne Johanning, and brother-in-law and sister-in law, Thomas and Barbara Johanning. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the Refuge of Hope Ministries, 405 3rd. St. NE, Canton, OH 44702. Family and friends will be received on Thursday from 6 to 8 pm at the Rossi Family Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Friday at 1:00 pm at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church with Rev. Fr. Don King celebrant. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery.  The family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to the Inn at Belden Village and Crossroads Hospice for all their loving care.
