Shirley Rinaldi Obituary

Shirley A. Rinaldi, age 79 of Canton, passed away Friday July 8th, 2016 peacefully in her sleep due to complications from kidney failure. She was born on July 19th, 1936 to the late Vernon J. and Mary (Cline) Sherer. Shirley was a proud 1954 graduate of Timken Vocational High School where she played the tuba in the band. She retired from Timken Mercy Hospital after 23 years where she worked as a float aide and on the Obstetrics floor. She also worked as a Home Health Aide for Timken Mercy and Doctor's Hospital after retirement. Shirley had a passion for her patients and all of them enjoyed and loved her very much. She was of Catholic faith and loved to go to the Monastery to talk to the Nuns and go to Mass. In the mid 1970's – 1980's, Shirley was in charge of the Glenwood, GlenOak and Plain Local Midget Football concession stands. Her entire family was involved in the operation of these every week. Families could not get enough of an Italian pastry she made every week called the “Pizza Freetz”. She also volunteered for the Democratic Women's Society, Special Olympics and was an avid McKinley Bulldog fan. But fundraising was her passion. She helped her children and grandchildren raise money for their different schools and organizations: Sacred Heart of Mary School, Frazer Elementary PTO, Harter Elementary, McKinley Booster Club and the GlenOak Band Silent Auction. But one thing we will never forget is that her favorite holiday was Christmas and her tree was up year round! It wasn't Christmas unless we made Grandma Shirley cry with the gifts we bought her. Shirley is survived by her two children, Joni (George) Young and John “JR” (Fiance Kim Kingsbury) Rinaldi, three grandchildren whom she adored, Chelsee (Patrick) Haas, Nick (Fiance Jayla Lockett) Rinaldi and Brandon Young, three great-grandchildren who were the light of her life, Aleighia Justeen, Harrison John Michael Haas and Riley Rose Rinaldi, brother Bill (Sue) Sherer, sister Doris (Dan) Bailey and her best friend and card playing buddy for over 40 years, Ruth Martin. She is also survived by many cousins, nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she is preceded in death by her sister, Naomi Whitmer Alkire, and the father of her children, John Rinaldi. Calling hours will be held at the Rossi Family Funeral Home on Tuesday July 19th, 2016 from 4:00 – 6:00 pm with a Memorial service to follow at 6:00 pm. Our family would like to thank the following doctors for their constant care, support and guidance throughout our Mother's illness: Dr. Domingo, Dr. Asfora and Dr. Iqbal. We would also like to thank the 9th Floor staff and 6th Floor Select Program staff of Mercy Medical Center, Bethany, St. Joseph's in Louisville and Altercare of Nobles Pond Rehab Centers for the caring attention that was given to our mother during the past 4 ½ months.
