Philip J. Alonzo, of Canton, passed away on Friday, March 22, 2024 at the age of 100. He was born to immigrant parents from Italy, Emilio and Gaetanina (Gennett) Alonzo, on January 26, 1924 in Canton, Ohio. Phil attended McKinley High School and American Technical Institute. He worked at the Hoover Company in the Engineering Department as a draftsman, retiring after 29 years. He was a longtime member of American Federation of Musicians, a member of St. Francis of Assisi, St. Anthony Campus, former member of the Holy Name Society, and also a member of the Ex-newsboys organization.
Phil was a musician – specifically, a guitarist. He worked in clubs with different groups, and played for special occasions throughout the area from the late 40's to the time he retired from music in the early 70's.
If you were to summarize Phil's life, he loved his faith, family, music, and golf. He was even able to say he had 6 holes-in-one in his lifetime – the last one being at age 90!
Along with his parents, Phil was preceded in death by his loving wife of 65 years, Theresa (Zirpolo) Alonzo; sisters Marian Fuciu and Irene Alessandrini; brothers Nick, Albert, and Tony Alonzo; and infant sister Matilda. He is survived by his sister Rosemarie Alonzo; sister-in-law Judy (Nicholas) Alonzo; and numerous nephews and nieces.
Family and friends will be received at St. Francis of Assisi Parish, St. Anthony Campus on Wednesday, March 27, 2024 from 10 to 10:45 a.m. A Mass of Christian burial will begin in the church at 11 a.m. Entombment will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
The family would like to thank Mercy Hospice and the Sanctuary Grande for the special love and care given to Phil.
In appreciation of Phil's Catholic education, memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the Stark County Catholic Schools, Christ the Servant Parish, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Catholic Charities, Sancta Clara Monastery, or the charity of your choice.
