Agostino De Matteis, age 87 of Canton, passed away early Wednesday morning following a brief illness. Born in Villa S'Angelo, L'Aquila, Italy to the late Michele and Clarice (D'Ascenzo) De Matteis, he was also preceded in death by his brother Baldo. Agostino immigrated to the United States in 1968 with his wife and son and has lived in Canton ever since. He was a member of St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church. Agostino was employed at Stark County Engineers for 20 years and retired in 2004. He enjoyed watching Cleveland sports, playing Italian cards, walking with his friends at Belden Village Mall and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandson. Agostino is survived by his wife of 58 years, Miranda (Priore) De Matteis, son Michael De Matteis of Canton, three grandchildren; Lauren De Matteis, Alexis De Matteis, and Michael (Morgan) De Matteis, great-grandson Camden De Matteis, brothers Joseph (Maria) De Matteis, Domenic De Matteis, and sister Dora (Fausto) Gioiello all of Canton. Agostino will be missed by many. Family and friends will be received on Saturday, December 22nd from 8:45 to 9:45 a.m. at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, with a Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 10:00 a.m., Rev. Fr. Don King as celebrant. Entombment will be in Calvary Cemetery mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or Aultman Hospice.
