IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Anna (Vavatsioulas)
Zouncourides
May 9, 1930 – January 24, 2013
Anna Zouncourides, daughter of the late Ioannis and Stavroula (Hassoglou) Vavatsioulas, was born in Katerini, Greece on May 9, 1930. She came to the United States in December of 1965 after marrying the late Alexander Zouncourides. They had 3 daughters (Ida, Alexandra and Stacy) and were lifelong residents of Canton, OH. When Anna came to the United States, she did not know how to speak Engl i sh and attended night school to learn the languag e and participate in daily American life. Once her kids were in school, she later joined the work force and trained to be a cosmetologist. She once said that it was the best decis i ons she ever made, as it opened her eyes to a new world. Her first job as a hairdresser was with Andre Duval at Mellet Mall where she formed good friendships with both her colleagues and clients. She later worked at Montgomery Wards beauty salon and finally retired from JC Penney Salon, maintaining her friends along the way.
Anna was an active member of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in the Koraes Ladies Society, volunteering her time and talents wherever needed, especially making Greek pastries and breads. Her church was a strong part of her life and she made sure her daughters understood the importance and significance of their Christian faith. Even though Anna never became the teacher she wanted to be, she still was an educator and taught her children and grandchildren life lessons through stories and examples. She was a great role model for her family. Anna had a zest for life, avoided conflict and always looked at the good in each person. She had an innate emotional intelligence and was courageous in every sense. Her family and friends thought she was an exceptional and unique person, due to the many hurdles she overcame with grace and dignity. She was an anchor of love and support. She exhibited unbelievable amounts of patience, tremendous integrity, kindness, thoughtfulness, love, and good humor. Anna was a social person and the support and love she received from her friends and family during her illness was a testament to the legacy she left behind.
During her battle with cancer, Anna was well cared for by her primary physician Dr. Nam, oncologist Dr. Schmotzer, neurosurgeon Dr. Tabet, radiologist Dr. Cheng, the staff at Aultman hospital, and Dr. Grossman and his wonderful staff at the Compassionate Care Center. Her family and friends will tremendously miss her. Anna is proceeded in de a th by her husband, her parents, her sister Julia Giannopoulos, and her brother Athansius Vavatsioulas. She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law Stacy and Michael Lawson, Ida and Mark Sibert and Alexandra and Jack Lull, her grandchildren Athina, Michael and Nicholas Lawson, Phillip and Anna Lull, and Alexa Sibert, her brothers George and Apostolos Vavatsioulas, and her many nieces and nephews, cousins and their families throughout the United States and Greece. Calling hours will be held at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church on Monday, January 28, 2013 from 10AM to 11AM. The funeral will be held immediately afterward with Rev. Fr. Daniel Rogich officiating. Interment will be in Forest Hill Cemetery Donations can be made to Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church Memorial Fund.
