Obituary

Cuyahoga Falls- Carolyn Sullivan Hinton, passed away peacefully on January 7th, 2024, at Maplewood.

Born on 7/27/1942, in Pittsburgh, PA, to parents Arthur Gilman and Elizabeth McGeorge Sullivan, Carolyn was eighty-one. She grew up in Montclair, NJ, East Palestine, OH and enjoyed childhood summers in Caribou, ME. Carolyn was a graduate of Ursuline High School in Youngstown, OH and Trinity College in Washington, D.C. with a BA in History, and an MA from Georgetown University in East Asian studies. She was gifted in languages speaking French, and several Chinese dialects using her skills in her work at the National Security Agency and as an editor at the Library of Congress. She retired to Pensacola Florida in 1999 where she joined Kiwanis mentoring middle-school students, teaching CCD classes at Little Flower Catholic Church and had a prison ministry until 2017. Because of her practical and spiritual help to prisoners, many continue to ask for her by name. She was a woman of principle standing up for life always, caring deeply in practical and spiritual ways for the underprivileged, the homeless and pregnant women. She was a missionary for God, always standing up for her Catholic faith and gently evangelizing those who did not yet know God.

Carrie had a brilliant mind, a deep abiding love of literature and shared her quick wit and sense of humor with friends and family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Harold C. Hinton, professor emeritus at George Washington University with whom she traveled the world during his sabbaticals. Both of her parents are deceased as is her stepson Dr. John Hinton Sr., but she leaves behind siblings; Barbara (Richard) Fortunati of Pensacola, FL, Gilman (Rosemary) Sullivan of Madison, OH, Deborah (Charles James) Lundy. of Akron, OH and Patricia (Edward) Hanolt of Canton, OH., stepdaughter, Paige (Doug) Bridges, step-granddaughters, Eva (Josh) Hartman and Laila (Stanley) Cochran, step-grandson, John Hinton, Jr. She also leaves many nieces and nephews.

Carolyn was a parishioner at Holy Spirit Church until hurricane Ivan in 2004 and then a parishioner at St Mary Catholic Church. To honor Carolyn, visitation will be held on Friday January 19th from 10:00 to 10:45 AM at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, 3430 St. Michael Blvd. NW, Canton, OH 44718.
