Obituary

Catherine "Katie" (Xides) Darrah, age 87 of Canton, passed away early September 21, 2021. Born in Stemnitsa, Greece to the late Gust and Sophia (Koukouma) Xides, she was also preceded in death by her sister Maxine Shinas; brothers Peter G. (Anne), Nick G., James G. Xides; sisters-in-law Mary Xides, Isabelle (John) Ruzinsky, Cleo Griffith, Reta Darrah, Carol (Dave) Smith; brothers- in- law Paul (Grace) Darrah, and David Darrah. She was a member of St. Haralambos Greek Orthodox Church and the Ladies Philoptochos Society.

Katie is survived by her husband Ronald Darrah and her children Constantinos "Dean" Darrah, Cathy (Bryant) Tela, and Ron (Janet) Darrah, and four grandchildren Paul (Katie) Tela, Bry Tela, Anna Darrah, and Anthony Darrah. Also survived by brother Douglas "Lefty" Xides; sisters-in-law Nancy Xides, Rosalee Ruzinsky, and Ellie Xides; brothers-in-law George Shinas and Carl (Esther) Darrah; cousin Mary Trifelos and many nieces and nephews.

Katie immigrated from Greece in 1946, at the age of 12 with her family. She graduated from Canton Lincoln High School in 1954 and married Ron in 1957. Katie worked as a cashier at A&P for many years but her true occupation was caring for other people.

Katie was a people person, she invited everyone over for a cup of coffee. It was typical for the kitchen table in the Darrah home to be surrounded by loved ones eating Katie's cooking and laughing. She loved to spoil her children and grandchildren with their favorite treats.

Katie worked tirelessly for her church, She joined many clubs and organizations taking on leadership roles, visiting the elderly, baking and serving food and of course being head cashier at church festivals.

As Katie's disease progressed, she lost her voice, but the last words she was able to speak were, "God bless you" and "I love you". She was filled with love and she shared it with everyone who was blessed to know her.

Family and friends will be received at St. Haralambos Greek Orthodox Church on Tuesday from 10 to 11 a.m. Funeral services will begin in the church at 11 a.m., with Rev. Dr. Nicholas V. Gamvas officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Hill Cemetery. A luncheon at the church will follow the interment.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Haralambos Greek Orthodox Church or the St. Haralambos Ladies Philoptochos Society.
