Domingo "Nene" Herraiz age 87 of Canton, passed away after a short illness early Thursday morning surrounded by his loving wife Tonia of 62 years and his children. A lifelong resident of Canton, born to the late Fidel and Pauline (Ampudia) Herraiz, he was also preceded in death by his brother Fidel "Fife" Herraiz and sisters Aurora "Irene" Rossetti and Isabelle Herraiz. He is survived by his wife Tonia (Trujillo) Herraiz, son Domingo (Lizette) Herraiz, daughters Deborah (Donald) Snyder, Paula Herraiz, and six grandchildren: Renee Snyder, Meghann (Jeremy) Moore, Lauren (Brenton) Simonson, Blake and Mason Anker, Manuel Herraiz; and great-grandson Owen Simonson; and loved by his many nieces and nephews, extended family and friends.

He proudly retired as a Captain from the Canton Fire Department in 1991 after serving for 33 years, retiring a second time from Aultman Hospital after serving for 25 years. He graduated from Timken Vocational High School in 1949. He married in 1955 and was a veteran of the US Army during the Korean Conflict.

He was an avid gardener and loved to work in his yard with all his plants. He enjoyed working with wood, reading about history, taking photographs and camping, but most of all he loved walking on the beach and collecting sea shells. His grandchildren describe him as thoughtful, hardworking, strong, kind, giving, loving, funny, witty, cheerful, loyal, generous, brave, protective, jolly, caring, mischievous, and bigger than life.

Family and friends will be received on Thursday from 5 to 7 pm at the Rossi Family Funeral Home with the firefighters Last Alarm taking place at 7. Funeral service will be Friday at 10:00 am in the funeral home with Very Reverend John E. Sheridan officiating. Entombment will be in Forest Hill Cemetery mausoleum.
