Dorothy Jean Ling January 7 ^th , 1941- June 8 ^th , 2017

Dorothy Jean Ling (Garner) was born in Huntington, West Virginia on January 7 ^th , 1941 to George and Dorothy (Dot) Garner. She passed away on Thursday, June 8, 2017 at St. Luke's Lutheran Home for the Aging. She was the oldest of the three children in the Garner family. She graduated with honors from Huntington High School in 1958. After completing high school, she attended Davis and Elkins College in Elkins, West Virginia where she graduated with honors once again. It is there that she met her husband and soul-mate, Thomas Y. Ling, a native of Taiwan. They married in 1962.

After relocating to Canton, Ohio, she started her career at Walsh University in 1969. There, along with her husband, she enjoyed a career that spanned over three decades, and taught two generations of Walsh students. She enriched not only the lives of her family, but also her "college family" giving all the many thousands of Walsh students who passed through her classroom an appreciation for the classical music. In 1991, she earned her Masters of Music History and Literature from the University of Akron. Dorothy will not only be missed by her family at Walsh, but also by her husband of 55 years, Thomas Ling of Canton, Ohio, her two sons Steven of Canton and David of Fort Wayne, Indiana, her brothers Robert Garner of Lexington, Kentucky and William "Billy" Garner of Richmond, VA. Family and friends will be received at the Rossi Family Funeral Home on Monday from 4 to 7 pm. Funeral services will begin at 7 pm. in the funeral home, with Rev. Deborah Chaney officiating. Private interment will be in Sunset Hills Burial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Dorothy J. Ling Scholarship at Walsh University. Donations can also be made in her name to the Greater East Ohio Alzheimer's Association.
