Obituary

G. Fantini passed away Bethany Nursing Home on Wednesday, October 18th.  He was born in Lanciano, Italy on July 4, 1929 to the late Carmen and Philomena Fantini.  His early life was spent in Italy where he was educated at a trade school and trained as a railroad track repairman.  He remained in Italy during World War II and immigrated upon the war's conclusion to the United States in 1947.  He came to Canton to join his father who previously settled here.  His mother died during the war and is interred in Italy.  On the voyage to America he met his future wife Elda on the ship and they were married on February 19, 1949 at Sacred Heart Church in Youngstown, Ohio.  They were the parents of three sons and were happily married until her passing in 2006.  After arriving in Canton, he was hired as a production worker at the Ford Motor Company Canton Forge Plant.  He was employed by Ford from 1948 to 1988 and is a retired member of UAW Local #542.  He treasured his American Citizenship.  Loved his family, Church, job and home.  He and his wife enjoyed making homemade specialties, and having friends over for the holidays.  He was predeceased by his parents, wife Elda 2006, two sons, Bruce in 1953 and Robert in 1964.  His three brothers and two sisters who remained in Italy are also deceased.  He is survived by son David, and sister-in-law Ellera Molinari of Canton.  Other nephews and nieces reside in Italy.  Calling hours will be in Sunday from 6 to 8 pm at the Rossi Family Funeral Home and Monday from 9:30 to 10:30 am at Little Flower Catholic Church.  A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Monday at 10:30 am in Little Flower Catholic Church with Rev. Fr. Leo Wehrlin celebrant.  Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery.  The family wishes to thank all friends and neighbors who kept in touch and a special note of thanks to Dr. Elizabeth Baum and the staff at Bethany Nursing Home for their compassionate and loving care.  In lieu of flowers, please donate to the charity of your choice.
