George G. Maragakes, age 92, died in Cincinnati, Ohio after a brief illness. He was born in
Canton, Ohio, on February 22, 1929. In addition to his parents, Konstantinos and Penelope Maragakes of Canton, Ohio, he was preceded in death by his father-and mother-in-law, Stavros and Agape Afentul, and brothers-in-law, George, and Gust Afentul, sister-in-law Margaret Afentul, and brother-in-law, George Tsarwhas.
Surviving to honor his memory are his beloved wife, Bertha Afentul Maragakes, his son, Steven D. (Holly) of Doylestown, Pa., grandchildren, Betsy (Jim) Silvestri, and great-grandson and great- granddaughter Camden and Holly of Woodstock, Maryland; Megan Maragakes, of Lancaster, PA, and Christina Maragakes of Doylestown, PA.; his daughter, Helen Maragakes Maret (Mark) of Cincinnati, Ohio, granddaughter, Kim (Pat) of DubIin, Ohio and great grandchildren, Brooklyn and Cooper. Also surviving is his brother, John Maragakes Douglas of Boca Raton, Florida, and his family; sister, Helen Maragakes Tsarwhas of Canton, Ohio, and her family; sister-in-law, Helen Dimos (George) and her family of East Canton, Ohio.
George was a 1947 graduate of Canton McKinley High School. He received his BS degree in Business Administration from Bowling Green State University in 1951. While at Bowling Green, he was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity, where he served as president in his senior year. George served his country with the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War, stationed in Camp LeJeune, North Carolina. During his service, he and Bertha were married on June 29, 1952, at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Canton, Ohio, where their families were lifelong members. Following his discharge, he was employed at the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. in Akon, Ohio and eventually retired from Goodyear after a fulfilling career.
George and his family lived in North Canton, Ohio for 18 years. He belonged to the North Canton Jaycees and was president during his last year in the organization. George and Bertha were lifelong members of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Canton, Ohio, where he served many years on the Parish Council, and as its President.
In 1972 he was transferred to the Philadelphia, PA. Original Equipment Sales Office as Account Executive for the Northeast Sales Division, calling on Original Equipment customers in 9 states. After moving to Exton, PA., in July of 1972, the family joined the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Lancaster, PA., where George served on its Parish Council. George's passions were always his family and his church and loved both greatly. George's hobby and second passion was playing golf with friends and family wherever he lived.
While living in Exton, George and Bertha began spending winters in Destin, Florida where they enjoyed playing golf, attending their church, St. Markella & Demetrios in Fort Walton Beach; and socializing with friends for 24 years. He loved college football and basketball and was an ardent fan of the Penn State Nittany Lions and The Ohio State Buckeyes. ln 2014, George and Bertha moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, where they lived at the time of George's death.
Visitation and Funeral services will be held at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 4705 Fairhaven Avenue, N. W., in Canton, on Friday, February 25.
Calling hours will be from 10 to 11 a.m., the Funeral service to begin at 11 a.m., with Rev. Fr. Nicholas Halkias officiating. Internment to be in Forest Hill Cemetery, 44th St. and Cleveland Ave. N. W.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 4705 Fairhaven Ave. N. W., Canton, Ohio, 44709.
