Obituary

George G. Tsarwhas, age 83, died Friday, January 23 rd at Mercy Hospital in Canton after a courageous 25-year battle with Parkinson's Disease. He was born in Canton, Ohio on April 14, 1931. In addition to his parents, Konstantinos and Helen Tsarwhas, he was preceded in death by his father-and mother-in-law, Gust and Penelope Maragakes, and his brother-in-law George Koutras. Surviving to honor his memory as a beloved husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, brother, brother-in-law and uncle are his wife of 54 years, Helen (Maragakes) Tsarwhas; his son, Dean G. Tsarwhas, MD (Amy), and grandchildren, George, John, and Elaina Tsarwhas of Lake Forest, Illinois; his daughter, Pamela (Tsarwhas) Burris (Gary), and grandchildren, Nicolas and Christina Burris, of Venetia, Pennsylvania. Also surviving is his beloved sister, Theana Koutras of Canton, and his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, George and Bertha Maragakes of Cincinnati, Ohio, and brother-in-law John (Maragakes) Douglas of Boca Raton, Florida, and many loving nieces and nephews. George was a 1949 graduate of Canton McKinley High School. He received his Bachelor's Degree in Education from Kent State University, his Master's Degree in Educational Administration from Kent, and has done extensive post-graduate work at The Ohio State University, Akron University, and Kent State University. George served his country during the Korean Conflict as an Army Corporal from 1951 – 1953. He received a commendation as an Outstanding Instructor at the Southwestern Signal School at Camp San Luis Obispo, California, where he taught radio repair. George has dedicated his 37-year educational career to one employer, Canton City Schools. He began teaching at Timken Vocational High School, then at Lincoln High School. George joined the administrative staff of Canton City Schools as Principal of the Canton Evening High School and Summer School. He then became Director of Community Educational Services. George was honored by his peers with his selection as Outstanding Adult Education Administrator in Ohio. He was also honored locally by the Stark County Community Action Agency for outstanding service and activities in enhancing community awareness and commitment to the needs of the disadvantaged. He has served on dozens of boards, committees, councils, and advisories on the local, state, and national levels. During his career, George has helped thousands of students to achieve their goals, and has developed partnerships with Canton City Schools, business and industry, community leaders, and non-profit agencies in order to make the Canton City Schools Adult Education program accessible to all Stark County residents. George's philosophy of education and dedication to learning for all has been an inspiration to thousands, and has earned him the title, "Mr. Adult Education." In recognition of his career in education, George received the Distinguished College of Technology Vision 21 Award from Kent State University in 2010. George was a lifelong member of St. Haralambos Greek Orthodox Church in Canton, where he and Helen were married on July 31, 1960. He was a member of the Men's Club of St. Haralambos, serving as its President for two years. He and his wife were active members of the Senior Citizens Group of the church, "The Silver Liners." During his battle with Parkinson's Disease, in 1995, George and Helen became members of the Stark County Parkinson's Support Group. They assumed the leadership of the group until 2009, educating themselves and hundreds of others about Parkinson's Disease, and providing care and support for people with Parkinson's and their caregivers. Family and friends will be received at the Rossi Funeral Home on Friday, January 30 th from 5 to 8 pm, and on Saturday, January 31 st from 10 am to 11 am in the church. Trisagion Services will be held at 6 pm, Friday, in the Rossi Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 11 am on Saturday, January 31 st in St. Haralambos Greek Orthodox Church with Rev. Dr. Nicholas V. Gamvas officiating. Internment will be in Forest Hill Cemetery.
