IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Helen (Shaheen)
Shaheen
July 7, 1916 – April 27, 2015
Helen Shaheen was born on July 7, 1916 in Des Moines, Iowa to Salem Shaheen Sr. and Mary Haddad. She was a graduate of Canton McKinley High School. Helen was a lifetime member of St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church, Ladies of St. George, Phoenician Auxiliary, Eastern Star, Arab-American Club, Crusaders, and the Choir of St. George. During her many years, Helen enjoyed a variety of work experiences: McCrory's Ten-Cent Store, Stark County Treasurer's Office, Stark County Relief Administration and the Draft Board. She later worked for her brother, Dr. Gus Shaheen, as his medical secretary for 50 years, retiring in 1989. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Kaiser, Michael, Dr. Gus, Dr. Salem Jr., and sister, Rose Esber. Survived by her brother John (Sally) Shaheen, Sr. of Canton, sisters, Wedad Shaheen of Canton and Pauline Shaheen of Louisville, KY; "daughter", Selana (Fred); "grandsons", Salem and Keaton; and numerous nieces and nephews. Helen was warm, creative, unselfish and talented, with much flair, humor and personality. She was an avid reader and particularly loved music and theater. She enjoyed travel, especially going to the musicals on Broadway. She channeled her creative abilities into entertaining her church community in directing many skits and musicals – one of the highlights being "Fiddler on the Roof," with an Arabic twist! She also had a flair for writing and contributed to many church-related periodicals. Some of the special memories of Helen include her red Cadillac, her sharp mind, her seamstress abilities, her love for family and music, her literary and theatrical creativity, her joyful spirit and her fashion flair. She recently shared that singing with The Malone Community Chorus for 12 years was one of the bright spots of her life, with "The Messiah" being her favorite work. Helen passed away peacefully into the Lord's presence on Monday, April 27 th , at the age of 98. "Aunt" Helen was such a blessing to many and will be sorely missed. Her family offers much gratitude to Dr. Lou Shaheen, the sweet team of caregivers and Crossroads Hospice. Family and friends will be received on Friday from 6 to 8 pm at the Rossi Family Funeral Home and Saturday morning from 9 to 10 am at St. George Church. Trisagion Services will be Friday at 7:30 pm in the funeral home. Funeral services will be Saturday at 10:00 am at St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church with Rev. Fr. Michael Corbin and assisted by Rev. Fr. Basil Shaheen. Interment will be in Westlawn Cemetery.
