Obituary

James “Jim” M. Irwin, age 76, of North Canton, passed away on Monday, February 16, 2026. He was born on May 21, 1949, to the late James and Lucille (Stewart) Irwin. A proud graduate of Perry High School, Jim went on to build a long and successful career with FedEx, retiring at the Senior Executive level in 2005. He was also a former member of the North Canton Elks.

Along with his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his sister, Betty Donahey, and his brother, Ken Irwin. Jim is survived by his loving wife, Rickie (Peters) Irwin, with whom he would have celebrated 58 years of marriage in June; his children, Jim Jr. (Jennifer) Irwin of Twinsburg and Kelly (Patrick) Sweeney of Jackson Township; and his cherished grandchildren, Kayley Irwin (fiancé Jordan Buck), Trent Irwin, and Brody Sweeney.

Family was the center of Jim’s world. Jim was immensely proud of his children and the lives they built. He was a constant role model and cheerleader for all that they did and never missed a special occasion, sporting event or a simple opportunity to spend time together. He brought his full, joyful, wholehearted presence wherever he went. Becoming a grandfather was one of the greatest joys of Jim’s life. His grandchildren adored him and he always made sure each one felt uniquely supported and deeply loved. He also cherished his grand-dogs, including the late Daisy and Ruby, and his current companions Molly, Skye, and Juniper. He treated his grand-dogs like royalty and often welcomed them in for long stays filled with walks, playtime and way too many goodies (always buttered toast).

Jim embraced life with enthusiasm, a deep love of learning, and a genuine appreciation for the people around him. He loved to travel, and the water always called to him. If there was a waterfront view, that’s where he wanted to be. One of his favorite places on earth was Maui, Hawaii, a frequent destination that brought him peace, joy, and unforgettable memories with family and friends.

Known within his family as “Mr. Fix It,” Jim had an uncanny ability to take on any project, big or small, and make it look effortless. He was the person everyone called when something needed attention, and he would immediately drop what he was doing to spring into action. He possessed a tool and skill for every occasion.

Jim had a fun-loving, endlessly optimistic and competitive side, especially when it came to a good wager. If it moved, he’d tell you that you could bet on it. Some of his best memories were made with family and friends in Las Vegas during the NCAA March Madness Tournament, where he brought people together, taught them games, and chased the thrill of “the big win" til the wee hours of the morning. If you asked how to spell his last name, it was, “Big I, little r, big WIN”….IrWIN.

He was a man who believed deeply in learning and sharing his wisdom in digestible anecdotes. “Knowledge is power,” he often said, and even in his final days, he was absorbing new information and passing it on. His other guiding principles, “follow the money” and “you are what you negotiate”, reflected his sharp business mind and were the basis of the practical lessons he instilled in his children and grandchildren.

Jim was kind, caring, exceedingly positive, and unforgettable. If you knew him, you loved him. He lit up every room he entered. Everyone seemed to have a unique nickname for him. From "JI", to “Big Jim”, to the "Master of Disaster", to "Keno Man", to "Mr. Buckeye". However, a lucky few had the privilege and honor to call him Papa or Dad.

For five years, he battled cancer with remarkable strength, resilience, and optimism, overcoming one challenge after another with grace and determination. His legacy of courage, love, and joy will live on in all who were fortunate enough to know him.

Family and friends will be received at the Rossi Family Funeral Home (720 30th St, NW in Canton, OH) on Saturday, February 21, 2026, from 1:00–2:30 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Jim’s name may be made to the American Cancer Society.
