Obituary

"Together Again"

James Nicholas Tomey peacefully went home to be with the Lord, and the love of his life, on February 24, 2026. Born on September 15, 1926 he was 99 years loved on this earth. Originally from Grand Rapids Michigan, James moved to Canton, Ohio with his family as a boy. After graduating from Timken High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard and proudly served in World War II.

James fell in love with Jeanette Albert and during their 68 years of marriage they created a beautiful family together. Known affectionately as "Jim" he was a caring and supportive husband, father, grandfather, and “Gido." Jim was a wonderful provider, working for the Hoover company for 41 years. He enjoyed walking, music, fixing things, and spending time with his family and close friends. He was a master gardener and skilled painter - landing articles in the newspaper for both talents. He enjoyed making people smile with his jokes and having heated conversations regarding the frustrations of being an avid Cleveland Browns fan. On Friday nights he could be found having a good time with his circle of close friends at Esber's Bar. Jim was full of wisdom and had a quiet peace about him. His legacy of love, patience, and supporting others lives on in those who knew and loved him.

He is survived by his two supportive children Nick Tomey (Tanya) and Sharon Albaugh (Dan); and beloved niece Bette Lou Weger (Tom). He was an inspiration to his grandchildren Melissa Albaugh, Amanda Allton (Brandon), Daniel Albaugh (Pam), and Nicole Smith (Joseph). He was blessed with his great-niece Sophia; and many great grandchildren Shayonna, Brycen, Brantley, Brexton, Brooklynn, Adelaide, Jordan James, and Noah. He has many loving nieces and nephews that will miss him deeply. His loved ones rejoice in knowing he is now together again with his wife Jeanette (Albert) Tomey who preceded him in death by 27 days. Also preceded in death by his parents Esper and Zekiah (Tarsha) Tomey; and cherished sisters Rose Bendekgey and Elaine Zenn.

Family and friends will be received at St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church from 10-11 a.m. on Friday, February 27, 2026. Funeral services will begin in the church at 11 a.m., with the Very Rev. Fr. Michael Corbin officiating. Private family interment in Forest Hill Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church.
