Ergazos, Sr.
November 26, 1924 – June 20, 2014
JOHN WILLIAM ERGAZOS, SR., age 89 of Canton, passed away Monday afternoon after an extended illness. Born in Canton, John was a graduate of Canton McKinley High School, then attended the The Ohio State University, where he was a member of the ROTC and he marched in The Ohio State Marching Band playing the tuba. He then graduated from Ohio Northern University and the William McKinley School of Law. John served our country during WWII earning the rank of 1st Lieutenant, was a well-respected attorney, practicing for more than 50 years, and a U.S. Magistrate. He was a member of St. Haralambos Greek Orthodox Church, serving four terms as president of the parish board. He was a member of the Stark County Bar Association, active in the United way, volunteered on the Professional Hall of Fame Festival committees for many years, and was recognized as St. Haralambos Men's Club Man of the Year in 1979 and as AHEPAN of the Year in 2002. He was preceded in death by his wife Margaret (Berbeles) Ergazos in 2013, parents Manso and Ella (Wongler) Ergazos, sister Barbara DeMattia, and was just recently followed in death by sister Marie Scritchfield. He is survived by his son John W. Ergazos Jr., granddaughters Lauren Eileen and Alyssa Catherine Ergazos - who are the pride of his life, daughter and son-in-law Veronica and Douglas Olson of Scottsdale, Arizona, brother and sister-in-law Lee and Kay Ergazos, and many nieces and nephews. Family and friends will be received on Friday from 10 to 11 am at St. Haralambos Greek Orthodox Church with funeral services to follow at 11 am, Rev. Dr. Nicholas V. Gamvas officiating. Interment will be in Forest Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in John's name may be made to the Philomatheon Society of The Blind, Inc., 2701 Tuscarawas St. W., Canton, OH 44708.
