Mihanovic, M.D.

Joseph Z. Mihanovic, M.D. passed away on June 2, 2014 in Mountain View, California at the age of 92. He had moved to California with his wife Rose in 2012 after living in Canton, Ohio for more than 50 years. Joe was born near Lepetene, Yugoslavia (now Croatia) in 1922 and spent most of his youth in the town of Split. He attended medical school at the University of Bologna (in Italy) and graduated in 1950. He completed further medical training (including an internship and residency) in Cincinnati, Ohio, St. Louis, Missouri and Canton, Ohio. He started his practice in Internal Medicine in Hartville, Ohio in 1956 and then settled back in Canton and conducted his medical practice with dedication from 1958 until his retirement in 1989. Joe was a member of the American Medical Association, the Ohio State Medical Society and the Stark County Medical Society – where he served as president for a period of time. He also served on the Advisory Board of Trustees at the House of Loreto and for the House of Retired Priests (in Louisville). He was a long-time member of the Unique Club and of Our Lady of Peace Parish. Joe was preceded in death by his parents Blaz and Danica (in Croatia) and his two sisters Zora and Zdenka (Italy) . He is survived by his wife Rose (DeGulis), his son Mark and daughter-in-law Judy (of Los Altos Hills, CA), his son David and daughter-in-law Heather (of Overland Park, Kansas) and grandchildren Erin, Mitchell, Joseph, Jacob, Gillian and Mara Rose. He is also survived by brother-in-law Albert DeGulis of Cleveland Heights, Ohio and several nieces and nephews. Joe enjoyed fishing trips and traveling, especially to visit his sons and their wives and his beloved grandchildren. His love of water and the sea came from his childhood in the coastal town of Split.
Calling hours will be at Rossi Funeral Home from 2:00 – 4:00 on Sunday, June 8. A Mass of Christian Burial for Joe will be held at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Peace Church on Monday, June 9, with burial following at Northlawn Cemetery. Following the burial, there will be a reception starting at noon at John's Bar & Grill. There will also be a subsequent service at Villa Siena in Mountain View, CA (where Joe and Rose have lived the past couple of years). In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Our Lady of Peace (Building Fund) or a charity of choice.
