Obituary

Joyce M. Vitale. Beloved wife, mother, grandmother born in Cleveland, Ohio June 3, 1942, passed away November 4, 2026. Daughter of the late Victor John and Edith Mannino. Loving wife to Joseph Vitale. Beloved sister to Karen Carcione of Solon, Ohio and brother John Mannino (Teri) of Atlanta. Wonderful mother to Laurel Stack (Sean), Joseph Michael (Jenny), and Kate Nicolosi (Jeffrey).

Joyce was a resident of Canton, Ohio since 1972. She graduated from Brush High School in Lyndhurst, Ohio, class of 1960, and received her bachelor’s degree from Kent State University.

Joyce loved all of God’s beauty: the outdoors, the beach, sunsets, music, the arts, traveling and cooking. She cherished her friends and family.

She was married for 62 years to the love of her life, Joe. Their story began on a blind date in University Heights where Joe was a football player at John Carroll. Despite telling her friend that she wasn’t interested in the football-player “type,” Joyce soon discovered that this date would be the start of a happy and fulfilling life together. Early in their marriage, Joyce and Joe lived in Cleveland, St. Louis, Los Angeles and Korea while Joe was in the JAG Corps. They settled in Canton, Ohio for Joe’s career and to raise their three children.

Family was at the heart of Joyce’s life. She was a devoted daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, sister and aunt. Joyce took pride in caring for her children and cheering from the sidelines for countless football, soccer and cheerleading competitions. She enjoyed bringing family and friends together around the dinner table to celebrate life’s milestones, big or small.

During her more than 50 years of living in Canton, Joyce cultivated loving friendships which grew over time while playing bridge and golf, gathering for garden and book clubs and volunteering in the community. She served as a docent with the Canton Museum of Art and was a member of the Junior League of Canton, the Canton Symphony League and the Canton Preservation Society.

Joyce was affectionately known as “GG” to her 10 beloved grandchildren from ages 27 to 7: Elizabeth, Meaghan, John Stack; Joseph, Bridget, Matthew, Patrick John (PJ) Vitale; and Laney, Emma Kate, Robert Joseph (RJ) Nicolosi. Summers were especially memorable when Joyce would host “GG Camp.” She shared with her grandchildren her love of music and dance parties, playing piano, nature walks, crafting Christmas ornaments and dealing up games of Gin Rummy, where she loved to challenge her young protégés. During their frequent family trips to Captiva Island, GG would spend hours with her “grands” swimming, collecting shells and amusingly feeding the aggressive seagulls at the beach.

Joyce’s beauty, enthusiasm, kindness, humor, style and incredible energy will be remembered by all who knew and loved her. She will be dearly missed.

In keeping with Joyce’s wishes there will be no visitation hours. A Mass will be held on November 24 at 11 a.m. at the Church of St. Dominic, 3450 Norwood Road, Shaker Heights, Ohio. Family and friends are invited to attend.

Donations in Joyce's memory may be made to the Church of St. Dominic and the Canton Museum of Art.
