Obituary

Leonard "Lenny" M. Morella, age 58 of Louisville, passed away Sunday. He was born in Canton to the late Leonard and Alice (Weston) Morella. A 1974 graduate of McKinley High School, Lenny made the State Finals in wrestling during his senior year. He graduated from the University of Mount Union, and later he was given the opportunity to share his skills as an account executive for Summerville's and MyOfficeProducts. Lenny served as President of the South Akron Board of Trade throughout the past decade and was often the face of the entire council since he was involved with so many of the Board's events. One thing was certain: if there was a Boards of Trade function, Lenny would be there. Lenny's legendary dedication was recognized by the group in 2008 and again in 2011 when he was awarded the Northern Ohio Area Chambers of Commerce Bright Star Award for his extraordinary commitment to the Council and the community as a whole. Even though his physical problems gave him great discomfort, Lenny was a fighter and he was supremely dedicated to serving others. He coordinated the South Board's Final 4 NCAA Basketball Championship reverse raffle, which generated funds for community organizations such as Project Ed Bear, Edwin Shaw Challenge Golf, the South Akron YMCA, the Stephen A. Comunale, Jr. Family Cancer Foundation, and Open M. Always persistent, Lenny was relentless when it came to achieving his goals and he routinely organized community events. One such event which he and his fellow Boards of Trade members embraced was his Christmas in September fundraiser to support Akron-area troops deployed in the Middle East. He was a big man who had an even bigger heart. Over the years, Lenny served as President and in various other offices for the Akron Boards of Trade Council. In 2007, the Council recognized his outstanding work on behalf of his community and the Boards of Trade when they presented him with the prestigious Buchholzer Award. More important to Lenny than all of the awards and accolades he received was his Italian heritage. He cherished his membership and participation in the Italian American Professional Businessmen's Club. One of his greatest loves was cooking, and he was especially proud of his tomato sauce, pizza, and pasta. We don't think you'll find too many people who would debate their merits. Oops, we forgot to mention his meatballs—he would never forgive us if we left them out. Lenny is survived by his cousins Mike, Dave, Lori, Robyn, Mark, Eric, Tammy, Doug, Kim, and Lisa; the DeStefanos; the Costellos; and good friends Andy and Lori Aliberti, Bonnie Bennett, Grace Tinney, Marie Byington, Albert Simia, Doug Babb, Herb and Lucinda Greene, Walter Moss, Freddy "The Frog" Shaheen, and many friends from the Akron-Canton area.  Special thanks to Bill Barber and Skip Summerville.  Family and friends will be received on Monday from 6 to 8 pm at the Rossi Family Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 10:00 am in the funeral home with Rev. Walter Moss officiating. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Lenny's name may be made to Thanksgiving in May c/o South Akron Board of Trade, P.O. Box 761, Akron, Ohio 44309.
