Madeline T. (Altieri) Hogsett was born May 30, 1949, in Canton, Ohio, to the late Ralph and Rose Altieri. A lifelong Canton resident, she graduated from McKinley Senior High School in 1967. Madeline devoted her life to her family as a stay-at-home mother, pouring her love, time, and energy into her children and, later, her grandchildren. But her motherly love was never limited to her own family. The friends her children and grandchildren brought home were welcomed, fed, cared for, and treated as family. Her home was a place where there was always room for one more.
On October 31, 1972, Madeline married the love of her life, Raymond Lee Hogsett Sr. Together, they built a marriage, a home, and a family over more than 53 years. They were blessed with two sons, Raymond “Rue” Hogsett Jr. and Vincent “Vinnie” (Siri) Hogsett.
For Madeline, caring for people often meant feeding them. She loved to cook and bake, filling the house with home-cooked meals and an endless assortment of cookies, cakes, pies, and desserts. Family gatherings were rarely small, and no one who came through her door had to wonder whether there would be enough food. Madeline also had an extraordinary love for decorating. Every holiday was an opportunity to transform the house and create something special for her family. Over the years, she accumulated enough holiday decorations to seemingly decorate twenty houses, and even that was not enough to contain her creativity. She was constantly making decorations of her own and finding new ways to make each holiday memorable.
Through all those years, Madeline was also the unofficial family photographer and videographer. At the many gatherings on Irwin, she could often be found behind a camera, quietly preserving birthdays, holidays, celebrations, ordinary afternoons, and generations of family memories. The photographs and videos she leaves behind are now an irreplaceable record of the family life she worked so hard to create.
Her greatest legacy, however, is her family. Madeline was a loving mother and grandmother whose life was deeply woven into the lives of her children and grandchildren. She leaves eight grandchildren: Raemar Hogsett, Raymond “Trey” (Cassandra) Hogsett III, Rhion Wesley, Christiana Hogsett, Marcez Hogsett, Tanea Osteen, Adoria Sanders, and Vinson Hogsett; as well as eight great-grandchildren. Also survived by her sister, Connie (Kenneth Jr.) Ash, and her brother, Nicholas “Nick” (Sherri) Altieri.
Madeline is also survived by her very special friends, Mary and LQ Ellis; Darrell “Uncle Bunky” Austin, her friend of 55 years who was like an uncle to her sons as they shared countless memories at holidays, birthdays, and McKinley games; longtime friend, Sheila (Stanely) Yanuck, whom she met at 15 and called her “baby sister,” shared memories of making wedding cakes and crafting; and brother-in-law Anthony “Tony” Hogsett, with whom she shared holiday recipes and new dishes she created.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Raymond Lee Hogsett Sr.; her parents, Ralph and Rose Altieri; and her brothers, Ralph J. Altieri Jr. and Carmin (Pam) Altieri.
More than anything, Madeline created a home. It was a home filled with food, decorations, cameras, children, grandchildren, friends, laughter, holidays, and memories. Generations of people were welcomed through her doors and cared for as if they belonged there—because to Madeline, once you came around, you did.
