Maria "Bia" A. Goncalves, age 85, formerly of Canton, passed away Monday, June 14, 2021 at her home in East Bridgewater, Massachusetts. She was born on November 10, 1935 on the island of Fogo, Cape Verde Island. Maria immigrated to Canton, Ohio in 1959 where she worked as a homemaker, who loved to cook for her family and friends.

She was the wife of the late Manuel Goncalves, and also preceded in death by her son Manuel, brother Malaquia Fontes, sister Benvinda Fontes, step-son Joseph, and step-daughters Veolante, Pauline, and Manueline.

Maria was the mother of Orlando Goncalves and his wife Kathy, Mary Messia Veiga and her husband Alcides, Anibal Goncalves, Joseph Goncalves and his wife Joanna. Sister of Niquinha Barbosa, Marcelino Fontes, Maria Fontes, Luciano Fontes, Matilda Monterio, and John Fontes. Grandmother of Tara, Miguel, Micah, Maliq, Sophia, Kenny, Kevin, Andrea, Jayden, Jojo, Gianna, Yvonne, Paul, Judy, Christa, Michael, Orlando, Wayne, and Yuolanda. The great-grandmother to 14 great-grandchildren, and good friend to Ruth Ramos and the Robert Miller family. Also survived by a host of many other family and friends.

Calling hours, in Massachusetts, were held at the Russell & Pica Funeral Home, 165 Belmont Street, (Rt.123) Brockton on Wednesday, June 23rd from 4-8 p.m.

Family and friends will be received, in Ohio, on Saturday, June 26, 2021 at St. Joan of Arc Parish in Canton, Ohio from 9 to 9:45 a.m. A Mass of Christian burial will begin in the church at 10 a.m. Entombment will follow in Calvary Cemetery, where she requested to be laid to rest, at the place were she called home, in Canton, Ohio.
