Maria "Maro" Hatzarides passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on October 21, 2026 after an extended illness. Maro was a kind and loving woman whose family meant everything to her. She was a homemaker “noikokyra” and strived for perfection in her home and especially her kitchen with all the delicious Greek meals and pastries she made for her family and friends. Her Greek heritage and Orthodox religion were important parts of her life.
Maro spent countless hours assisting with the baking for the church’s annual Grecian Festival; baking bread for the holidays and baking Prosfora for the church services. She was a proud member of the Koraes Ladies Society and the Senior Citizens group at Holy Trinity and enjoyed gathering with her church family. She was also a member of the Pontian Society “Komninoi” Canton, Ohio. Mostly Maro was proud to be called Yiayia by her grandchildren who meant the world to her. Her love language was cooking and baking, and making all of her children’s and grandchildren’s favorites foods.
Maro was born on June 15, 1940 in the villages of Greece and migrated to Kilkis when she was a toddler. Shortly after the war, her family moved to Thessaloniki. She met and married her husband John Hatzarides in 1965, and together with their sons, Steve and George, came to the United States (Canton) to be with her sister Aphro, her brother-in-law Christos and their family in 1971.
Maro is survived by her loving husband of over 60 years, John; her son, Steve (Heather) and grandchildren Kaylee, Kyra and Maia; son George; daughter Elizabeth Steed (Roger) and grandchildren John, Nicholas, Athena Bodi (Mason) and Christian; sister Aphro Karasarides and many nieces and nephews here and in Greece.
Maro is preceded in death by her parents, Evrepithes and Despina Stefanides, and brothers and sisters, Theano, Demetrios, Athena and Demetrios, and her mother and father-in-law, Estathios and Elisabeth Hatzarides all of Greece.
The family would like to give a special thank you to Dr. Louis Shaheen, and the countless medical professionals, for all the care and attention throughout the years.
Family and friends will be received at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 4705 Fairhaven Avenue NW, Canton, Ohio 44709, on Monday, October 26, 2026 from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm. Funeral services will begin in the church at 12:00 pm with Rev Fr. Nicholas Halkias officiating. Interment to follow in Forest Hill Cemetery, 44th Street and Cleveland Avenue NW.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 4705 Fairhaven Avenue NW, Canton, Ohio 44709.
