Mary Carpathios June 23, 1929 – January 28, 2017
Mary Carpathios, age 87, passed away on January 28, 2017 following a brief illness. Our beloved mother and grandmother was born June 23, 1929 at Mercy Hospital in Canton, Ohio to Michael and Stamatia Volas. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Carpathios, MD, her brother Gust Volas and her parents. Left behind with cherished memories are her children Cynthia Carpathios of Canton; Neil and Carole Carpathios of Portsmouth, Ohio; and Michael Carpathios, MD of Pittsburgh, PA. Mary was a loving yiayia to her grandchildren Alexandra Carpathios of North Canton, Jonathan Carpathios of Portsmouth, Ohio, Michael Workman of Brecksville, Ohio and Lee (Morgan) Workman of North Carolina. Also surviving are her cousins Betty Tsangeos and her sons Michael (Lynne) Tsangeos, Lee (Ann) Tsangeos and Mary and Ron Feltz and sons Jim (Tina Vowels) Feltz and Paul (Kory) Feltz. Mary was a graduate of McKinley High School (1947) and Ohio University (1951) and worked in customer relations at the Timken Roller Bearing Company. Besides raising her family, Mary contributed much of her time to civic activities. She was a president of the Stark County Medical Society Auxiliary, was on the Women's Board of Malone College, Malone's Forum Lecture Series, Guardian Ad Litem for Juvenile Court and served on the Higbee Fashion Board. Mary was baptized and married at St. Haralambos Greek Orthodox Church. She sang in the church choir most of her life, edited "The GOYA Headliner" and served on the board of the bookstore. Music and the church were two constants in her life. Family and friends will be received at St. Haralambos Greek Orthodox Church from 10 to 11 am Friday, February 3 rd with Reverend Dr Nicholas Gamvas officiating the funeral service at 11:00 am. Internment will be in Forest Hill Cemetery. Memorial donations can be made to St Haralambos Greek Orthodox Church.
