Obituary

Matthew Joseph Vitartas passed away peacefully in his Canton home on December 20, 2013 after celebrating his 92nd birthday on December 13th. Born in Braddock, Pennsylvania to Anna and Matthew Vitartas. He received the Holy Sacraments at Saint Isidore Lithuanian Catholic Church. He attended Braddock High School class of 1939, was an Eagle Scout and Order of the Arrow, and graduated in 1943 from University of Pittsburgh with a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering. He served as a US Naval officer in the Pacific Theater during WWII on LST 909. He worked for Westinghouse, Union Metal Manufacturing Company and Roynan Associates in sales of street lighting and power generating systems. Always active in the community, Matt served on the Board for Plain Local Midget Football, Our Lady of Peace Cub Scout Troup, member of the BPOE Elks #2029 as Exalted Ruler and District President. Matt is preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters, his wives Mary (Stringer) and Mary Jo Staffileno (Allen). Matthew is survived by his children Lynn (Reede), Michele (Sues) and Paul; 11 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. With deep gratitude and love, we thank Hallie Staffileno, of the home, for her devoted, loving care of our father. His inquisitive wit will be missed by many. Family and friends will be received on Saturday from 2 to 4 pm in the Rossi Funeral Home. The Vitartas and Staffileno families invite you to share the celebration of Matt's life on Saturday, January 11th. The families will receive from 9 to 10 am at Little Flower Catholic Parish with a Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 10 am, Rev. Fr. Donald Feicht celebrant. Inurnment will follow at Forest Hill Cemetery.
