Max M. Wachtel II,
Age 89, of North Canton, died Friday, Aug. 26 following a brief illness. Born in Danzig Free State Europe (Gdansk, Poland), he became a United States citizen in 1945. A 1951 graduate of Canton McKinley High School, he is the former owner of Kalk's Carpeting. He served in the U.S. Army from 1953-55 and was decorated for his service in the Korean War as a member of the 47th Transport Army Aircraft Maintenance Unit. He was honored as the Stark County Veteran of the Year in 2005. His service to the community was extensive, including membership in the Unique Club for 50 years and as longtime treasurer, Temple Israel, Scottish Rite 32nd Degree Mason, Canton Jaycee, past president of Canton Ex-Newsboy's, past State Commander of Jewish War Veterans, American Legion and North Canton Elks. A volunteer at the Canton VA Clinic, serving 5,500 hours over 16 years, he was a member of the Jaycee Mother Goose Land Park Committee. An Eagle Scout recipient in 1947, he was a friend to many especially his fellow swimmers at the North Canton YMCA and his breakfast and dinner club companions and his wonderful neighbors.
He was the son of the late David and Golda (Genee) Kalk. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son Michael, in 1957, his first wife, Lillian (DiGiantonio), who died in 1986 and his second wife, Roxanne (DePasquale), who died in 2019.
He is survived by his brother Joseph Kalk (Phyllis), nephew Dan Kalk (Amy) and niece Amy Gold (Robert), sons: Max "Chip" Wachtel III (Anna), Brian DePasquale, Paul DePasquale (Laura); daughters: Laura Schmidt (David), Jean Harding (Richard Presutti), Jill Dietle; grandchildren: Max (Marc) Wachtel IV, Jeremy Wachtel, Joshua Wachtel, Joseph Wachtel, Jennifer Hart, Rachel Schmidt, Richard Schmidt, Daniel Schmidt (Brittany), Nathan Schmidt, Jillian Davis (Ryan), Jordan Harding (Kevin), Jeffery Harding (MaKarah), Jonathan Harding, Richard Presutti (Christina), Chelsea Dietle (Chuck), Leah Dietle, Bella DePasquale and Dominic DePasquale, and great grandchildren: MaLana Harding and Silas Presutti. Family and friends will be received on Tuesday from 5 to 7 pm at the Rossi Family Funeral Home. Funeral services will be Wednesday, 10:00 am, at the funeral home with Rabbi David Komeroski officiating. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in his name to the Unique Club Scholarship Foundation (P.O. Box 9481, Canton, OH 44711).
