Mike, age 89, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 24, 2014, surrounded by his family. In addition to his parents, Potito and Leonarda, Mike was also preceded in death by sisters, Nancy, Mary, Anna and granddaughter, Natalie Bailey. Married to Christina (Gennett) for 67 years, they raised seven children: Mike Jr. (Susan), Renee' (Paul) Bailey, Potito (Helen), Carla (Rocky) Simler, Tony (Becky), Melanie (Keith) Heist and Frank (Julie). They were blessed with 18 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. Mike is also survived by his brother, Rocco (Anna). After graduating from Timken High School, Mike served in the Navy during WWII. After surviving a plane crash, his drawing talents were put to use in the Navy cartoon strip where he created the beloved character, Torque. Mike worked for Stern and Manns Department Store and the Canton Sign Company for more than 50 years. Mike was a Commercial Artist by trade, he is responsible for the letter work on many area commercial signs and his precise letter work was known and sought after throughout the region. In retirement, he enjoyed pencil sketching family, friends, his favorite cowboys and horses. Mike loved his family, pasta, an afternoon martini, golf and time spent with friends (Tony Rossi, deceased, Bill Alexander and Kenny Harp). The entire family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to St. Joseph Care Center and Crossroads Hospice. A special thank you to Sister Mary Ann. There will be a celebratory 10:30 A.M. Mass at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church on Saturday, June 7, 2014. Friends may call from 9:30-10:30 A.M. at the church.
