Obituary

Nena Anna (Kessinides) Kounouzvelis, age 88 of Canton, passed away Tuesday afternoon. Born in Canton to the late Nick and Semela (Mastorides) Kessinides, she was preceded in death by her husband Spelios, beloved son Mark Peter, and sister Sadie Christ. Nena was a graduate of Canton McKinley High School and a member of St. Haralambos Greek Orthodox Church. She worked for the Timken Roller Bearing Company and Montgomery Wards. She was the Greek School teacher for St. Haralambos and the Superintendent of the St. Haralambos Sunday School for many, many years. In addition she worked as the secretary of St. George Greek Orthodox Church. An amazing baker, she was known as Yia Yia Nena the "ACE" of Baklava. Nena was a member of the Philoptochos Ladies Society, Senior Citizens of St. Haralambos and was recognized as the 2015 Woman of Distinction at St. Haralambos. She is survived by her granddaughters Nanetta (Christopher) Kounouzvelis-Williams, Mary and Anna Manos, daughter-in-law Eleni Manos and husband George Manos, nephews Peter (Rhoda) Christ, Nick Christ and Karen Christ, nephews and nieces James Adams, Becky Adams, Niki (Bill) Strohmenger, Nikita (Sheryl) Kounouzvelis, Steve (Amber) Kounouzvelis. Nena had a special place in her heart for her great-nieces and nephews; Kelly (Brad) Alge and children Alex, Jake, Sofie, Sadie, Eric (Ann Marie) Christ and children John Nicholas and Claire, Tracy Christ, Allison (Mike) Sarris and children Dean and Luke, Stephen (Debbie) Humphrey and children Nicholas, Mason, Zach, Audrey, Paul (Leslie) Humphrey and children Maximus and Norah. She is also survived by her great and loyal friend Myra Presutti. Nena was so loved and will be greatly missed by Rev. Constantine and Presvytera Panayiota Shiepis, Dr. George and Shari Shiepis, Dr. Keric and Melissa Shiepis, John and Dena Bahas, Mike and Haritina Kakoules and all their children. Family and friends will be received on Friday from 10 to 11 am at St. Haralambos Greek Orthodox Church with funeral services to follow at 11:00, Rev. Dr. Nicholas Gamvas officiating, assisted by Rev. Fr. Constantine G. Shiepis, Rev. Dr. Daniel Rogich, Rev. Dr. Deacon Keric Shiepis and Rev. Dr. Deacon Orestes Varonis. Interment will be in Sunset Hills Burial Park. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to St. Haralambos Sunday School (251 25 th St. NW, Canton, OH 44709) or St. George Greek Orthodox Church (364 1 st St. SE, Massillon, OH 44646).
