Obituary

Robert Lanzi, age 93, died after a sudden illness on July 9, 2022, surrounded by his children. Born in Rome, Italy, Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Claudio and Ophelia Lanzi, his wife of 50 years Virginia (DioGuardi), and his sister Luciana Saliola. He is survived by his children Regina (Gary) Zych of Dublin, Ohio; Claudia (Dr. George T.) Williams; and Robert Lanzi II of Columbus, Ohio; his brother-in-law Giuliano Saliola and niece Simona Saliola, both of Rome, Italy; his sister-in-law Dorothy DioGuardi; his beloved grandchildren, Dr. George Robert (Shannon) Williams, John (Emily) Williams, Marisa Williams, Teresa Williams, Christopher (Becky) Zych, Nicole Zych, Michelle Zych, Maddie Lanzi, and Logan Lanzi; the lights of his life, his great-grandchildren, Jamie, Leah, Callen, and another on the way; and numerous cousins throughout Italy.

Robert immigrated to the United States in 1954. He worked at Superior Brand Meats and retired after 30 years of service. Following his retirement, he helped at the family store, DioGuardi's Italian Market.

A proud Italian, he was known for making handmade pasta and pasta sauce, being a great teacher at passing on the traditions of his heritage. He was an avid golfer up until the week he died with his golfing family at Sable Creek – sinking two hole-in-ones during his life. A lifelong member of the North Canton Elks, Robert enjoyed several hobbies, including crossword puzzles, walking, playing cards on Wednesdays, and watching all sports on TV. He enjoyed dancing in his youth and remained a great dancer. He was an enthusiastic supporter of his grandchildren's sports. At the age of 93, he completed a 5K in downtown Canton and crossed the finish line holding hands with his three-year-old great-grandson.

Robert was known affectionately as "Grandpa Bob" to family and friends alike. To know him was to love him – his warmth and genuineness were unmistakable and magnetic. He told the best stories and loved to reminisce with his children and grandchildren. To make him laugh was the best feeling, and hardly anything made him laugh harder than his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He made every effort to see them regularly and build true, strong bonds with them; he glowed with pride and laughed in awe as he watched his great-grandchildren grow. His family was the center of everything. We take comfort knowing he is together with Ginny again watching over us always.
