Russell "Russ" E. Phillips, Sr. Russ slipped away peacefully on Thursday, May 16, 2024 at St. Joseph's Care Center in Louisville at the age of 87. He was born on August 14, 1936 to the late Russell J. and Dorothy (Cheviron) Phillips. Russ was a lifetime resident of Canton, graduating 1954 from Canton South High School, and later from The Ohio State University in 1959.
In 1958, he met the love of his life, Carroll Rose at a Nursing Student's dance. They were married in 1959. Russ was a devoted family man. He enjoyed all holidays and get togethers. He was a long-time member of Christ the Servant Catholic Parish, a life-time member of the Boy Scouts of America, and received an Eagle Scout award.
In 1975, Russ started Russell E. Phillips, CPA, which later evolved into the now Phillips Organization. He was a CPA for over 60 years, retiring at the age of 80.
Russ was a kind man who never hesitated to help anyone in need. He enjoyed golfing, camping, and boating on the Ohio River with his friends. He also loved watching all sports, especially the Cleveland Browns, Indians, and Ohio State Football, as he was a season ticket holder for over 50 years.
Russ was very active in the community. A long-time member of the Unique Club of Stark County, he served as Past President, Treasurer, and Trustee throughout the years. He was also a member of the Canton Ex-Newsboys, where he was just recently inducted into their HOF this past April.
Along with his parents, Russ was preceded in death by his brothers-in-law Jack McFarren and Albert Rose, Jr.
Russ is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Carroll (Rose) Phillips, and their children Beth Sarachman of Canton, Russ (Tammy) Phillips of Louisville, and Jean Wiley of Ft. Myers, FL. Also survived by five grandchildren Russell Phillips III, Daniel Phillips, Andrew (Lauren) Sarachman, Jule (David) Wellner all of Canton, and Sarah Natale of Baton Rouge, LA; one great-grandson Jacob Wellner; siblings Carol McFarren, Jack (Judy) Phillips, Wendy (Carl) Busnick; sister-in-law Patricia Rose; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Family and friends will be received at Christ the Servant Catholic Parish on Wednesday, May 22, 2024 from 12 noon to 12:45 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will begin in the church at 1 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made, in Russ' name, to the Canton Ex-Newsboys Association (P.O. Box 20124 Canton, OH 44701).
