Sam Assali, age 95 of Canton, passed away Sunday, August 5, 2018. He was born in Majdal Shams, Syria on December 25, 1923 to the late Girgi Abu Assali and Khalaek Ammar. Sam emigrated from Syria in the early 70's; he loved his new adopted country, but never forgot his roots. He retired from the County, after twenty years of service. Sam was a member of St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church and the Masonic Temple. He had a great appreciation for all sports, especially tennis, as he coached and was avid tennis player himself, playing the game well into his 70's. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Nazha; and sisters Helwa, Assya, Mountaha, Souraya, Zakia and Nabiha. Sam is survived by many nieces and nephews from Canton, Damascus and Montreal. Sam was a force of nature and will be missed immensely. Family and friends will be received at St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church on Wednesday from 10 to 10:45 a.m. Funeral Services will begin in the church at 11 a.m., with the Very Rev. Fr. Michael Corbin as celebrant. Interment will follow in West Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church.
