March 21, 1928 – January 17, 2017
Samuel Karipides, age 88 of Akron, passed away Tuesday, January 17, 2017. Born in Canton to the late Kyriakos and Mary Karipides, he was a graduate of Timken Vocational High School, and continued his education at Northrop Institute of Technology, studying engineering. Sam was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, and retired from Goodyear Aerospace as a mechanical engineer after 40 years, beginning his career in the airship design department. After his retirement he continued his hobby as an avid woodworker creating many unique, beautiful and detailed projects. An avid sports fan, The New York Yankees, Duke basketball and Canton McKinley were dearest to his heart. He never wanted to miss a game whether it was televised, on the radio or live attending many McKinley football games with his sons John and Mike. He was a life member of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church. Samuel is preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Earline, his parents, and sisters Sophia and Ruby Karipides. He is survived by his children John (Betty) Karipides, of Uniontown, and Michael (Susan) Karipides, of Canton; sister Kathryn (David Brown) Karipides, of Cleveland Heights; brother Michael Karipides, of Canton, and Mickey (Mary Lou) Karipides, of Saratoga Springs, NY. Also survived by four grandchildren Megan (Ryan) Laatsch, Daniel (Jessica) Karipides, Matthew and Nicholas Karipides; and great-grandchildren Gracie, Brady, Declan, Jackson and Nolan. Family and friends will be received Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, with Trisagion services at 6 p.m. Another hour of visitation on Monday morning from 10 to 11 a.m. Funeral services will begin at 11 a.m. at the church, with Rev. Dr. Daniel Rogich officiating. Interment will follow at East Liberty Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church (4705 Fairhaven Ave. N.W. Canton, OH 44709).
