Obituary

Scott Allen Tolbert

May 18, 1959 – October 2, 2026

Scott Allen Tolbert, age 67, passed away peacefully on October 2, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family. Born on May 18, 1959, Scott was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, and friend whose greatest joy came from the people he loved. Scott graduated from Jackson High School in 1977.

Scott shared a life full of love and happiness with his beloved wife of 45 years, Barbara (Johnson) Tolbert. Together, they built a home and a family that meant everything to him.

Scott was a loving father to Christopher, James and Michael Tolbert and held a very special place in his heart for his daughter-in-law Shellie Tolbert and his future daughter-in-law Rachel Fincham. He was a proud Papa to Emma, Caroline, and Cade Tolbert, who brought tremendous happiness and pride to his life.

Scott was the son of Elizabeth (Campbell) Tolbert and the late Richard Allen Tolbert. He is survived by his mother, Elizabeth, his aunt, Margaret Campbell, siblings Debbie (John) Coyle, Craig (Maria) Tolbert and his mother-in-law Carol Oberlin.

A hardworking and skilled General Construction Superintendent and Carpenter by trade, Scott took great pride in his work. Scott worked for Northern Valley Contractors most of his career and retired from Kenmore Construction. One of his favorite projects was the construction of seven miles of the Akron Towpath, from Merriman Road to the Compost Factory. He was proud of the work he accomplished and of leaving behind something that would be enjoyed by others for years to come.

Scott's talents and love of working with his hands extended far beyond his career. Scott was an accomplished Eagle Scout. He was the person his family could always count on fixing things, especially the things his children managed to break. He enjoyed using those skills to make crafts with Barbara. Whether something needed repaired, built, or figured out, Scott was always the one everyone turned to.

Outside of work, Scott loved spending time on the water. Boating and being on the lake were among his favorite activities. He also loved riding his electric bicycle with Barbara, enjoying the time they spent together exploring and simply being side by side. Scott was an active member of the St. Michael’s Catholic Church landscape committee.

For the final two years of his life, Scott courageously lived with ALS. Despite the challenges that came with the disease, he remained surrounded by the love and devotion of his family. His strength and determination throughout those two years will always be remembered.

Scott will be remembered as a hardworking man who could build, repair, create, and solve just about anything. More importantly, he will be remembered as a husband who loved his wife, a father who was always there for his children, a grandfather who cherished his grandchildren, and a son and brother who was deeply loved by his family.

Though he is no longer with us, Scott's hands may have built many things throughout his life, but his greatest legacy is the family, love, and memories he built that will live on long after him.

He will be deeply missed, forever remembered, and always loved.

Family and friends will be received on Thursday, October 8th from 5 to 7 pm at the Rossi Family Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Friday, 10:00 am, at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church. Interment will be in Sunset Hills Memory Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to the ALS Association through their website at www.als.org.
