Obituary

Sophie A. Adams, age 91, of Canton, Ohio passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 19, 2024, with her loving family by her side at The Inn at Belden Village where she had made her home for the last five years.

She was born in Canton, Ohio to the late Steve and Olga (George) Adams. She was preceded in death by her sister and brother-in-law, Anna and Mike Trbovich; brother and sister-in-law Ted and Audree Adams; brother Nick Adams; nephew, Mike Trbovich and nieces Rebecca Labowitz and Sandy Stamaton.

She is survived by sister-in-law Penny Adams of Akron; nieces and nephews, Greg Trbovich, Gary and Michelle Trbovich, Nicki and Nick Horaitis, Olga and Doug Coutts, Nick (Michelle) Adams, Alexia and Chris Paterakis and many great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews.

Sophie was a 1951 graduate of Timken Vocational High School and retired from Canton City Schools, Department of Pupil Personnel after 42 years of service! She was a devoted daughter, sister, aunt and Godmother. She was very strong in her faith and very proud of her Greek heritage. Sophie was an active member of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church where she spent her youth and her adult life. She sang in the choir for over 30 years and held several positions with the Greek Orthodox Church Choir Federation. She was also a member of the St. George Serbian Orthodox Church where she sang in the choir for many years and was a member of the Circle of Serbian Sisters. Sophie was very involved in the community which included Canton City Schools Federal Credit Union, Quota International Club and Community Services of Stark County. Sophie loved helping others and her generosity & kindness was a great attribute that will be missed by so many.

Sophie, also known as "Kris Adams," enjoyed a great singing career in the late 1950's and early 1960's. She sang with big bands such as The Dom Clivi Orchestra and The Jack Halkides Band at the Moonlight Ballroom in Canton. She also sang at various dinner clubs in the Canton/ Akron area. Sophie loved spending time with her family and always was there to offer a helping hand when needed. She loved the theater, especially going to Blossom Music Center Portside every summer with the neighborhood gang and traveling to Chautauqua, NY every year. Sophie and her longtime dear friend Gloria traveled throughout the U.S. and abroad. Enjoying trips to New York City, California, Las Vegas, Greece, Italy and Turkey. She also enjoyed day trips and dining out with her Quota Club lady friends. Sophie enjoyed life and cherished her time with family & friends! She was such an inspiration and great role model to so many and her thoughtfulness had no boundaries.

The family would like to thank the staff at the Inn at Belden Village and Southern Care Hospice for their exceptional care and kindness and treating Sophie like family!

Family and friends will be received at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 4705 Fairhaven Avenue, in Canton, on Monday, November 25 from 11 am to 12 noon. Funeral services will begin at 12 noon in the church with Rev. Fr. Nicholas Halkias officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Hill Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, St. George Serbian Orthodox Church or the Canton Student Loan Foundation
