Sophie Pergins passed away on December 13, 2014. Born February 7, 1927 in Canton, Ohio. Devoted daughter of the late Peter and Katherine Pergins. Dear sister of the late Harry Pergins (Katie), the late Helen Tatarides (Theodore), and the late Theodore Pergins. She is survived by her sister-in-law Athena Pergins and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Sophie never married but helped to raise Helen's daughters Kathy Murphy and Melanie McCauley. She spent the last months of her life in the loving care of Melanie McCauley. Sophie was "Nouna" or Godmother to many; as well as Thea Sophie and Aunt Sophie. She worked at Weber Dental and the Ohio Power Company (later AEP). She was an active member and devoted volunteer at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church where she was on the Parish Council, President of the Senior Citizens Club, Co-Author of the Church's Greek Cookbook and Co-Founder of the Church's Annual Greek Festival started in the 1970s. She was their Woman of the Year in 2010. Sophie was accomplished in needlepoint and cross stitch and donated many beautiful pieces to family, friends and charity. Her niece Nicole Tatarides wrote: "It's not every day that you come across and individual as beautiful as this. Caring, loving, nurturing and so very generous. A pillar of strength that has not faltered, not crumbled, but instead stands strong; year after year, her entire life long. Ask and you receive.....don't ask.....And she still knows and understands. She comes forward, concerned, to extend her helping hands. She comes forward to help, not in a grand parade, not with the blasts, like those with trumpets blow. But silently, with integrity.....like a whisper..in the shadow.....so that no one else will know. Some search their entire life to find their purpose or "true meaning"; The essence of her life is imprinted in the heart of her loved ones.....they are gleaming. We, the fortunate ones, that Sophie Pergins loves and cares for; will carry with us, always, in our smiles, a special twinkle, for ever more." Special heartfelt thank you to SarahCare of Belden Village, Crossroads Hospice and St. Luke Nursing Home. Family and friends will be received on Thursday from 10 to 11 am at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church with Rev. Dr. Daniel Rogich officiating. Interment will be in Forest Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations in Sophie's name may be made to Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 4705 Fairhaven Ave. NW, Canton, OH 44709.
