Valia Marcelli's Obituary

Valia (DeFrank) Marcelli, age 95, passed away peacefully on March 31, 2026, in Massillon, Ohio.

She was born on May 22, 1930, in Pennsylvania, to Carl and Mary DeFrank. Valia was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Mary DeFrank, and her husband, Joseph Marcelli.

Valia lived a full life centered around her family, her friends, and her faith. Valia loved connecting with friends and made it a priority to stay in touch, cherishing monthly gatherings with her Timken High School Class of 1948 friends for many years. She worked for Ford Motor Company, where she built lasting friendships and took pride in her work, always valuing the ability to share what she earned with others. In retirement, she found joy in bringing people together, hosting with thoughtful touches like gifts, balloons, fresh flowers, and beautifully prepared desserts, especially her cheesecakes, that guests always looked forward to. She enjoyed celebrating holidays with family, dining at her favorite local restaurants, and visiting Amish Country, where she loved to shop and find anything pretty. She especially loved the color pink and had a special love for animals, especially cats. As a member of St. Benedict Catholic Church, she was known for her generosity and her quiet support of others, including the Santa Clara Monastery and various charities.

Valia is survived by her beloved sister, Norma, with whom she shared a lifelong bond and friendship, as well as many loving cousins, including her cousin and Goddaughter, Paula Ziccardi. Paula was by Valia’s side every day, caring for her with compassion and a servant’s heart, with the support and assistance of her husband, Michael Ziccardi. Through their care and attention to detail, they made sure Valia, and her sister Norma, were able to be together in their later years, bringing them both comfort and peace.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at the Congregation of the Divine Spirit Motherhouse beside the House of Loreto, 2700 Harvard Ave., Canton, Ohio 44709, on April 11, 2026, at 10:00 a.m., with burial to follow at North Lawn Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made, in Valia’s memory, to the Santa Clara Monastery or a charity of your choice.

The family would like to thank the sisters and caretakers at the House of Loreto and The Laurels of Massillon for their attentive and compassionate care over the years. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew her.
