Obituary

Velma A. Scrima, 91, passed away Sunday morning December 13 th at Mercy Medical Center following a brief illness. Velma was born in Summitville, Ohio on March 24, 1924 to the late Matteo and Mary Zirpolo. She was a 1942 graduate of McKinley High School. Velma worked at the Kobackers offices for six years before joining Stern & Mann's intimate apparel department in downtown Canton, from which she retired after 23 years. They were wonderful to work for and she enjoyed her time there where her co-workers and customers became lifelong friends. She belonged to Mercy Senior Friends, Mercy Services Senior Projects, AARP group #2894, YMCA Seniors and YMCA Helping Hands. Velma was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church since 1942 where she belonged to the St. Peter's Women's Club and the St. Peter's Altar & Rosary Society. She enjoyed taking her AARP mystery bus trips to places like Branson, MO as well as her vacations to Tampa, FL. Velma was an avid gardener who loved flowers and cherished the times she spent working outdoors but also enjoyed playing bingo or cards and working her puzzles. Velma was a huge sports fan of everything Ohio – Cleveland Indians and Cavs and most importantly her beloved Buckeye football and basketball teams. Her most cherished memories were the years she spent in the Horse Shoe on Saturday game days and where you will find a brick commemorating her as a "Buckeye for Life". She loved the Ohio State Marching Band and never missed a skull session before the game. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by husband Phillip H. Scrima, daughter Susanne K. Scrima, sister and brother in-law Ida and Tony Bernardo and brother Mike Zirpolo. She is survived by daughter and son-in-law Joanne & Ronald Simmons, Galena, Ohio, daughter Elaine Scrima & Heidi Barnhart of Tampa, Florida, her pride and joy, grandson Joseph and wife Andrea Simmons, Galena, Ohio and her very special "little one", great granddaughter Rossi Susanne Simmons, sister and husband Theresa and Philip Alonzo and several nieces, nephews and cousins. A special thank you to Sheila, RN, and Patricia, NA, 9 th floor, Mercy Medical Center who were a gift to mom and our family. Family & friends will be received Thursday, December 17th from 9:30am-10:30am at Rossi Family Funeral Home followed by a mass at St. Peters Catholic Church at 11am. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations can be made in Velma's name to St. Peter's Catholic Church.
