February 12, 1941 – January 17, 2024
Walter W. Craven, age 82 of Canton, passed away Wednesday, January 17, 2024 after a brief illness. Born in Negley, Ohio he was preceded in death by his parents, Sidney C. and June Craven, two grandsons, Anthony Doyle and Tim Doyle, Jr., many brothers, and a sister. Walt was a 1958 graduate of Timken Vocational High School, a proud Army veteran, and member of the American Legion Post #44.
After returning from the service, Walt began working at Republic/LTV Steel where he remained until he retired in 1999. He was most proud of his work at the US Steel Workers Union Local #1800 where he began as a rep. steward and worked his way up to numerous leadership roles. He ran for, and won, the positions of Secretary, Treasurer, Vice President, and filled a vacancy as Interim President during one election. He enjoyed serving his members and attending the continuing ed classes and conferences. One of his proudest moments was meeting the late Senator John Glenn. Walt and his wife Rosalie are members of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Canton. With Walt being a die-hard Ohio State fan football fan, they would spend their fall and winter Saturdays watching their Buckeyes.
Walt was quick to tell you, his life started the day he married Rosalie. He deeply loved his family. He is survived by his wife of 47 years Rosalie (Scannelli) Craven and three children; Bob (Kim) Becherer and their children Nicole Richard, Michael Josh (Beth) Becherer, Michelle Becherer and Stephanie (Brian) Dunphy; Jon Becherer and his children Theodore (Matthew) Leaf-Habib, Elizabeth (Christopher) Dehghanpoor and Jon Travis Becherer; and Lisa (Tim) Doyle and their children Teisha, Nicholas, and Olivia Doyle. Also survived by eight great-grandchildren, sisters Jane (Vince, deceased) Bernabei, Sue (Sylvester - deceased) Premier, Linda (Bud-deceased) Rochford, Edie (Michael-deceased) DeCost, two brothers William Craven, all of Canton and Terry (Dolly) Craven of Texas, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Family and friends will be received on Thursday, January 25, 2024 from 10 to 10:45 a.m. at Little Flower Catholic Parish in Canton. A Mass of Christian burial to begin in the church at 11 a.m., with the Very Rev. Richard Pentello as celebrant.
