IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Wedad (Shaheen)
Shaheen
March 7, 1920 – June 25, 2015
Wedad was born to Salem Shaheen and Mary Haddad on March 7, 1920. She attended Summit Grade School, Lehman Junior High, and graduated from McKinley High School. During World War II, Wedad worked in an attorney's office. In 1940, her father made a visit to the City Clerk of Courts, explaining that he had a daughter who needed a job. That conversation took place on a Friday, and she started work the following Monday. She worked there in the Civil Division of Canton Municipal Court for 46 years, serving three clerks: Jesse D. Gross, Robert DeRoche and Tom Harmon. Her leadership ability allowed her to attain the title of supervisor early on. She retired quietly and gracefully in 1986. This gave her extra time for travel, which she enjoyed. The title of "supervisor" suited her not only in the work world but also at home... and especially in the kitchen. Hospitality was one of Wedad's specialties, and cooking was a passion for her. It was her joy to always be prepared to host and feed family and guests. She and her late sister, Helen, were a great cooking team, yet Wedad was always "in charge." She became "famous" for her culinary talents, having the knack for seasoning foods perfectly. In fact, some of her favorite Middle Eastern recipes have been published in a cookbook authored by Fred and Linda Griffith. Wedad was a lifetime member of St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church, also participating in St. George Ladies Society and St. George Church Choir. Additionally, she was past president of the Phoenician Auxiliary, The Crusaders of Canton as well as a member of the Arab-American Club, Malone Community Chorus and a 75-year member of Eastern Star. Yet, her primary devotion was to the family, as she (and her sister, Helen) were the first to be there to care for ailing parents or anyone else in the family who was ill or needed extra assistance. Even though Wedad thoroughly enjoyed "getting dirty" when tending to her beloved garden, she otherwise always dressed in a sharp manner, complete with styled hair, makeup, jewelry and painted nails. She was equally very sharp-minded, intelligent and quick-witted, giving attention to all business details, even to her last day. She was very proper, had a great sense of humor and a heart overflowing with generosity. Wedad passed away peacefully into the Lord's presence on Thursday, June 25 th at the age of 95. "Aunt" Wedad was a blessing to many and will be missed intensely. Her family offers much gratitude to Dr. Lou Shaheen, the precious team of caregivers who surrounded her during her last few weeks and Crossroads Hospice. Survivors include: brother, John (Sally) Shaheen, Sr. of Canton; sister, Pauline Shaheen of Louisville, KY; "daughter", Selana (Fred); "grandsons," Salem and Keaton; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Kaiser, Michael, Dr. Gus, Dr, Salem Jr. and sisters, Helen Shaheen and Rose Esber. Family and friends will be received on Sunday, June 28 th from 6 to 8 pm at Rossi Funeral Home and Monday, June 29 th from 10:30 to 11 am at St. George Church. Trisagion services will be Sunday at 7:30 pm in the funeral home. Funeral services will be Monday at 11 am at St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church with Rev. Fr. Michael Corbin and assisted by Rev. Fr. Basil Shaheen. Interment will be in Westlawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Wedad's name may be made to St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church, 1118 Cherry Ave. N.E., Canton, OH 44704.
