Daniel Pastor Obituary

Daniel P. Pastor, 86, passed away suddenly July 17, 2020. He was buried at sea following services on board the USS Essex March 29, 2021. Danny was born August 8, 1933 in Canton to Peter and Helen Pastor, and grew up blessed with extended family, including grandparents, nearby. He attended Garfield Elementary and Timken Vocational High School, where he studied printing. Danny enlisted in the U.S. Navy following high school graduation in 1951 and served until 1955. He married Christina Amos in 1952. He was proud of his service in the Mediterranean, including experiences in the onboard printshop and adventures on shore patrol. His love of the ocean lasted throughout his life. He especially loved St. Petersburg Beach and treasured vacations there.

Dan joined Danner Press Corporation after the Navy. He remained at Danner for 43 years until his retirement in 1998 – earlier than he would have preferred. Although he held supervisory roles in prep/pre-press, he maintained his union membership. An administrator once suggested he rip up his union card, and Dan replied would do so when the administrator tore up his college diploma. He was promoted to Director of Operations in 1994 and to Vice President of Operations in 1995. Dan delighted in problem-solving and coordination. He was deeply saddened by the actions of Danner’s new owners in closing the plant in 2002, without regard for the employees.

Danny and Christina were members of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, where his initiative helped start the hot lunch meal program. Danny’s mother Helen enjoyed attending services with them many Sundays.

In addition to his parents and much-loved in-laws Harvey and Catherine Amos, Danny was preceded in death by daughter Cathy in 2013 and Christina in 2016 – heartbreaking losses that darkened his last years.

Danny is survived and missed by daughter Susan K. (Sue) Pastor and grandchildren Nola Pastor and Robin Barrett; sister and brother-in-law Nancy and Gary Bowen and niece and goddaughter Lorie Llorens; brother James and sister Mary Esther Pastor; and son-in-law and granddaughter Ray and Hailey Butcher. His large extended family includes many cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was grateful for Pastors James and Elaine Painting as both family and clergy. Danny’s heroic effort in clearing out and selling the family home led to a joyful connection with the Bachelor family.

Calling hours are at 10am Saturday, July 17 at Rossi Family Funeral Home, 730-30th Street NW Canton followed by a service at 11am. The family requests no flowers. Danny supported organizations focused on assisting U.S military veterans and children. Memorials could also be made to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 21333, Canton, 44702, and designated for the hot lunch program.
