Harry "Pete" Shaw Obituary

Harry W Shaw, Jr, “Pete”

Pete, age 98, passed away at 1:55 p.m. at Aviva Hills Assisted Living Facility on Friday, December 9, 2022 after a long and profound life

He was born in Clearfield, PA on January 11, 1924 to the late Harry W. Shaw, Sr. and Nathalia Hugar. He enlisted in the Army right out of high school (even though one of his funny stories was how he intended to enlist in the Navy!) Pete was a proud World War II Veteran having been part of the third wave at Utah Beach in Normandy as part of the first mechanized unit to land there. He also participated in the Battle of the Bulge and the liberation of Dachau. Among his many medals, he was awarded the French Legion of Honor and the French La Guardierre medals. He was so happy to return to Normandy for the 75th anniversary of D-Day, all expenses paid by Donnie Edwards and his Best Defense Foundation.

All of his life he never talked about the war until he returned from Normandy. After that,he gave many talks in front of schools and organizations. There was always a crowd around him when he spoke, and he never relied on notes.

After the war, Pete was the owner of the Supersonic Car Wash in Canton, which was the first brushless car wash system. He later owned La Shaw Health Food Store. Pete loved to attend auctions with his son, Skip, and collect antique clocks. Pete was also well known for his expertise in dancing, especially the jitterbug.

Preceded in death by his wife, Edie, his beloved son, Skip on 11/29/2022, daughters, Natalie and Marilyn. He is survived by his daughter in law, Maryanne Shaw, Skip’s wife, of Hartville, four grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, one great-great grandson.

Special thanks to his Incare Hospice nurse, Magan Sullivan, Staff at Aviva Hills, Allison Dudley, and all the staff at Mission BBQ, Natasha and the rest of the crew at Athens Restaurant, as well as all who had visited him and cared for him so deeply. It warms my heart how fully he was loved. Also, thank you to his special friends: Ron Feltz, Larry Grove, Curt Baumann, Dan Ardelean and Gary Osterwyk.

Family and friends will be received from 9:30 to 11 a.m. on Thursday, December 15, 2022 at Little Flower Catholic Parish, 2040 Diamond St NE, Canton 44721. Funeral Mass to begin in the church at 11 a.m., with Very Rev. Canon Christopher Henyk as celebrant. In lieu of flowers, please send donations, in Pete’s name, to Best Defense Foundation, 249 HWY 101, Suite 312, Solana Beach, CA 92075.
