Hazel Dishnica Obituary
HAZEL (ESBER) DISHNICA, passed away at Mercy Medical Center on Monday September 16, 2013. Born in Canton, Ohio on July 31, 1914 a daughter of the late Farris and Laiya (George Shaheen) Esber, the family lived in Detroit, MI from June 1928 to August 1939 when they moved back to Canton after the death of her mother. She graduated from high school in Detroit in June 1932. She married Richard Dishnica on August 18, 1945 at St. Paul's Episcopal Church and she became a very active member of the Episcopal Church Women (ECW), the Alter Guild and the church choir during the 1950's through October 1973. She was a Red Cross Volunteer Nurses Aid during World War II at the old Mercy Hospital downtown and an avid bowler during her younger days and later with the church league. She and her husband retired in October 1973. He was Executive Secretary of the Restaurant and Tavern Association for 41 years. They moved to Hemet, California July 1974 to be near their children. She became a very active member of the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepard in Hemet and was a volunteer bookkeeper for the church and assistant treasurer for 12 years. She was also active in the Episcopal Church Women (ECW) and the church choir. She was volunteer with the Hemet – San Jacinta Valley Red Cross and the Riverside County Health Dept. with their blood bank. Her husband of 37 years died in Hemet on September 16, 1982. She moved back to Canton in June 1989. She and her husband enjoyed their retirement by traveling along the West coast, and many trips to Florida where they had vacationed when they still lived in Canton and also again in their retirement. She continued traveling with her family and friends to many other places in the United States, Alaska, Canada and several countries in Europe and a special trip to Lebanon and Syria where she met cousins for the first time. The last trip she made was to her granddaughter's graduation from the University of Oregon in Eugene, Oregon in June 2003. Her love of music and singing continued in later years with her singing with the Harmony Makers church group singing at local nursing facilities. After that she became a homebody as she aged. She is survived by her son Richard “Rich” and daughter-in-law Tamie Dishnica of Berkeley, CA, daughter Ronna Dishnica of Redondo Beach, CA, one loving granddaughter Erica of San Francisco, CA, one sister Ruth Nowling and one sister-in-law Mrs. James (Janet) Esber both of Canton, nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews and one special niece Mona Wolff and he husband Steve who attended to her many needs with Steve preparing her evening meals. Preceded in death besides her parents, her brothers Alex and wife Edna, Esber (Joey), James (Jim) and Freddie at a young age, nephew Ferris Esber. She was the oldest living member of the Esber clan and the oldest member at St. Paul's. There will be no calling hours. A private graveside service will be held at West Lawn Cemetery with the Rev. Dr. Barbara Bond officiating. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 425 Cleveland Ave. SW, Canton, OH 44702 or St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church, 1118 Cherry Ave. NE, Canton, OH 44704, where her parents were Charter Members.
