Helen D. Armatas, age 102, of Canton, passed away peacefully in her home Saturday, January 2, 2021, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Fterno, Lefkada, Greece on December 24, 1918 to the late Christos and Akrivi Sklavenitis and preceded in death by her husband of 71 years Dimitrios Armatas, brothers Ioannis and Stathis, and sisters Stavroula and Chryso.
She became responsible for her children and elderly father-in-law when her husband immigrated to the U.S. Our mother faced harsh living conditions prevalent in the village at that time which she overcame through her spiritual and physical strength. In 1967, Helen joined her husband in Canton and took care of her family while working until her retirement from Mergus Restaurant. Through the years, she helped young and old that came along in her life with love and kindness. She was a member of St. Haralambos Greek Orthodox Church and the Silver Liners. Helen is survived by her children Maria Politis, George (Athanasia) Armatas, Steve (Fran) Armatas; grandchildren Helen (Makis) Asimakopoulos, Dimitra (Eric) Koehler, Jimmy Armatas, Phillip (Lauren) Armatas, Eleni (Tom) Kostakis, Christina (Konstantinos) Polychronis; eight great-grandchildren: Konstantinos and Michael Asimakopoulos, Alyssa Koehler, Alexi, Evie, and Peter Kostakis, Amalia and Gia Armatas; sister Milia (Lefteris) Limberakis of Greece; sisters-in-law Vasilo Sklavenitis, Soula Sklavenitis, and Dionisia Armatas; and many nieces and nephews in the U.S. and in Greece.
Our mom loved her Greek Orthodox faith and attending her church. She loved her family and they will never forget her delicious cooking, especially her fried potatoes and spinach pies with homemade phyllo dough. Mom was always ready to lead the line in traditional Greek folk dancing.
Private calling hours and private funeral services for only close relatives will be held the morning of Saturday, January 9, 2021 at St. Haralambos Greek Orthodox Church. Makaria memorial dinner will be held at a future date.
