Mrs. Josephine Marie Mezquita passed away early Tuesday morning. Mrs. Mezquita was born in Martiago, Spain on April 8, 1925 to the late Rafael and Carmela Vicente. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Massillon, as well as a member of The Spanish-American Club (men's club and the ladies' club). She enjoyed playing cards with the other members of the Spanish Clubs for years on Fridays, and was a life-long Massillon High School football fan, as she went to many of the Massillon/McKinley games.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Andrew Mezquita (9-7-1982), whom she was married to for 36 years. Also preceded by two sisters, Mrs. Laureana Vicente, Mrs. Palmira Gil; four brothers, Manuel, Frank, Peter, and Gesus Vicente; and great-granddaughter, Jayani Seth.
Survived by son, Andrew John (Susan) Mezquita; daughter, Carmela A.Mezquita (Scott Moorhouse); five grandchildren, Cristal (Andy) Bourn, Kimberly (Ajay) Seth, Kerri (Ronald) Brown, John (Lisa) Mezquita, Lawrance “Larry” (Lisa) Mezquita; seventeen great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.
Family and friends will be received on Tuesday from 10 to 11 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Massillon. A Mass of Christian Burial will begin in the church at 11 a.m., with Rev. Fr. Raymond Paul as celebrant. Interment will follow at Sunset Hills Memory Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Akron Children's Hospital- Jayani's Army Fund or to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
