Matilda L. Spitale, age 100 of Canton, passed away on Thursday, March 25, 2021, surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Canton on March 10, 1921 to the late Elia and Serafina Capaldi. Matilda was a life member of St Anthony/All Saints Parish; she enjoyed ballroom dancing with her husband of 41 years, Jimmy, to the sounds of the 1940’s big band sound, but her family was her pride and joy and what she loved most in the world. Caring for her home and family was her full time job. People marveled at her memory of stories about her family and neighborhood of Italian immigrants from the 1920’s on. Her 100th birthday was celebrated with her family reminiscing about her life.
Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Vincent (Jimmy) Spitale, and two brothers Fred and Larry Capaldi. Matilda is survived by her daughters Anna Marie (William) Mavrakis of Canton, and Debbie (Dennis) Bachtel of Massillon; sister Eleanora Nader of Canton; four grandchildren Christina (Tom) Steyer, Sara (Colm) Walsh, Matthew (Stacey) Bachtel, and Mark (Amanda) Bachtel; twelve great-grandchildren; and many devoted nieces and nephews.
Family and friends will be received on Wednesday morning at the Rossi Family Funeral Home from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at St. Anthony/All Saints Parish at 11 a.m., with Rev. Fr. Tom Kraszewski as celebrant. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery. The family wishes to express their gratitude to the caring staff of Aultman Hospice. Memorial donations may be made to Aultman Hospice.
