Nicholet Vaitsis, born to Irene and George Vaitsis on August 2, 1921, returned home to her Lord and Savior, on April 5, 2018. Although Nicholet was born in Canton, Ohio and was a lifetime resident, she made an extended trip to her parents’ homeland of Greece, along with her mother Irene and sister Katherine, in 1927, where they remained for six months. During that time, she often spent the days enjoying one of her favorite pass times, reading, and was doted on by her maternal grandmother, Polyxini Nicolaidou. Nicholet was a creative person who enjoyed drawing and sewing. She inherited the talent of sewing from her mother’s side of the family. The clothing she made incorporated the use of a treadle sewing machine, but she often would enjoy stitching by hand. Each pass of the needle produced perfectly spaced stitches, equal in length. Nicholet was a devout Christian, who joined the Church choir, as a teenager, at Saint Haralambos Greek Orthodox Church, in Canton. There she participated in weekly services, along with other Church members, including her sister Katherine.
Nicholet also loved to cook and bake, resulting in delicious meals and pastries. She gave the same fine attention to these tasks, as she did with her sewing. Over the years, she spent time helping her brother, Tony Vaitsis, in his wholesale bakery, Tony’s Pastry Kitchen. Nicholet worked at Canton Hardware, in her younger years. She often commented that she had an enjoyable experience there, due to her kind and well-liked boss. Nicholet also worked for Anderson Insurance Company and was a government employee, at the Stark County Courthouse. More than anything, Nicholette will be remembered for her kind, gentle spirit and was a friend to man and animal alike. She despaired to see any animal in peril, often feeding and giving shelter to homeless cats and other animals. She gave a loving home to several of these cats. Nicholet Vaitsis is survived by sisters Katherine Vaitsis, Elpinickie (Nicki) Vaitsis Simitacolas and Maria (Mary) Vaitsis Hadjian and brother, Anthony (Tony) Vaitsis, along with several nieces and nephews. Viewing and final respects may be paid on Wednesday, April 11, 2018, from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., followed by the funeral service, at 11:00 a.m., at Saint Haralambos Greek Orthodox Church, in Canton, Ohio, with Reverend Doctor Nicholas V. Gamvas officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Hill Cemetery.
