Popey (Calliopi) Antoney Kleon passed away peacefully on May 19, 2022 at the age of 85. Popey was born in Canton, Ohio to the late Demetria and George Antoney. She was a 1954 graduate of Timken High School where she was honored with the outstanding female vocalist award. She graduated from Mount Union College in Alliance, Ohio with a Bachelor of Music Education in 1958. She also attended Westminster Choir College in Princeton, New Jersey. Popey taught in the public schools and privately taught voice and piano lessons for 40 years. She presented many musical programs. She was in the Oratorio group, the Music Study Club, and the Ladies Philoptochos Society. She held memberships at the St. Haralambos Greek Orthodox Church in Canton, Ohio and the St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church in Baltimore, Maryland. Her beloved husband George Kleon died in 1998. She is survived by her daughter Detria Courtalis and her son in law Nick Courtalis of Bel Air, Maryland along with her pride and joy, granddaughters, Callie and Alexa. Popey’s life and loves were completely dedicated to music and her family. Relatives and friends are invited to gather together at the viewing on Wednesday, May 25th beginning at 10am at St. Haramlambos Greek Orthodox Church, 251 - 25th Street NW, Canton, Ohio 44709. Funeral services will begin at 11am with Rev. Dr. Nicholas V. Gamvas officiating. The family is inviting you to the traditional Makaria luncheon following the funeral. The interment will follow the luncheon at Grandview Cemetery 1399 Franklin Avenue, Salem, Ohio 44460. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations may be made in Calliope’s name to the St. Haralambos Greek Orthodox Church.
