Rudolph “Rudy” P. Scarpino, also known as “Scarp” to many, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday evening, May 20, 2021 with his loving wife of more than forty years, Rebecca, by his side.
Rudy was 94 years of age, born in Canton on January 14, 1927 to the late Salvatore and Sarafina Scarpino. He was preceded in death by six brothers and four sisters. He is survived by Rebecca of the home, his sister in law, Ingrid (Kenneth) Miller, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Rudy was a Massillon resident but during the first half of his life he was a proud to call Canton his home. Like many, he also spent ten years after retirement in Florida.
Rudy was part of “America’s Greatest Generation” and proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was held as a prisoner of war in Japan for over one year. He returned home and began working at Republic Steel, Canton, retiring after 27 years. He was a member of the VFW Chapter #3747, a local DAV chapter, the Massillon Senior Center, and the Babe Stern Walker's Club.
Rudy had many hobbies, some of which included hunting, gardening, and cooking. He spent a number of years growing and canning his own produce. A picnic or family meal was not complete unless a jar of Rudy’s famous canned peppers and tomatoes was on the table.
Rudy was blessed with artistic talent in the areas of music and art which he enjoyed sharing with many over a 70 year period. He taught himself how to play guitar in his late teens and mastered that instrument. He sang and played the guitar in his own band which specialized in the genre of “American Standards” and also in a number of other popular bands at various venues in Northeast Ohio including Moonlight Ballroom at Meyers Lake. He especially enjoyed painting landscapes on canvas and gifted a number of paintings to many over the years.
Family and friends will be received at the Rossi Family Funeral Home on Wednesday, May 26, 2021 from 11 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. Funeral services will begin in the funeral home at 12 noon, with Deacon Randy Smith officiating. Interment will be in St. Joseph Cemetery in Massillon. Memorial donations may be made to St. Anthony/All Saints Parish, 1530 11th St SE, Canton, Ohio 44707.
