Vivian Glenn Obituary

Vivian (Vi) M. (Fisher) Glenn 1925-2016

Age 91, of Canton, peacefully went home to be with the Lord on December 31, 2016 while surrounded by loved ones at home. Vi was born in Mineral City on April 18, 1925 to the late Earl and Doris (Mead) Fisher. After her birth, she went on to serve others tirelessly for each one of the next 33,495 days. She was the second eldest sibling of a family with 7 children which is what began her nurturing demeanor. The Great Depression began when she was only 4 years old, and not only did she help raise her younger siblings, she began earning money at the age of 5 to help keep food on the table. At age 11 she got her first job which she held until she was 15 as a maid for her neighbors which sometimes paid her in food for her family. She left school after 9th grade to be able to provide more for her family. Shortly after she became a “Rosie the Riveter” making Bombay doors during WWII. Later she went on to receive her GED which allowed her to become a LPN which she was for 40+ years. She had a passion for helping people evident by her long caretaking career but also by the way she lived. A nurse is required to provide compassionate care, but Vi always went above and beyond by taking care of each person she came across as if they were her family. She also opened her home to many guests throughout the years, from her brothers, newly wed son and daughter-in-law, all the way to a pen pal from Asia that she never met until she picked her up from the airport and many, many more. Not only did she open her house to people, but she also gave a home to numerous animals all of which were either strays who wandered to her house, rescued from shelters, or taken in from a family who could no longer keep their pets. In addition to her love of animal caretaking she spent countless hours tending to her plants and feeding birds. Her home was always filled with plants and she always had a beautifully landscaped flower garden in front of the house and vegetable garden in the back. She loved to spend time with her granddaughters tending the garden and birdwatching out her big back window. Before her daughter’s passing, the two loved to spend time together going to auctions and garage sales or quote “dumbin’ around”. The pair also loved spending time at the V.F.W. and The Eagles in Louisville. She continued her tradition of going to garage sales with her granddaughters Courtney and Brittney. Vi also kept up a 20-year tradition of getting monthly dinners with her best friends whom she loved very much. After her formal retirement from Oakhill Manor following 35 years of employment she felt she was “too young” to retire at age 73 and went on to care for an elderly couple for the next few years. Additionally, she became an Avon representative which later made her known to many as Vi with Avon. She is preceded in death by her daughter Joan Chipps, grandson Jerry Miller, husband William Glenn, and siblings Bud, Bill, Tom, and Ed Fisher, Dot (Fisher) Rohr, and Elinore (Fisher) Kelly. She is survived by her son Bill, daughter-in-law Beth, granddaughters Courtney Glenn and Brittney Glenn, grandson Bill Miller (of New York) and brother-in-law Gary Glenn, and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. A special thanks to Catholic Charities Adult Day Services at St. Joseph in Louisville for bringing her so much joy over the past couple of years. She loved the days when she got to visit and participate in all of the activities while her family was a work and school. Another special thanks to Compassionate Care Hospice for helping the family with care taking needs the past 8 months, especially Janet and Kim. In lieu of flowers, please contribute to Catholic Charities Adult Day Services 2308 Reno Drive Louisville, OH 44641.
